Boom Goes the (Nucular) Dynamite

I am 1,000 points behind, in second place in BTS, competing with first place AI China. China dominated the other continent accumulating 5 vassal states. Then China declared war on me. I have been able to defend myself nicely and have gained hundreds of experience points and several great generals as a result. I reached the tech advantage of modern armor and stealth bombers, so I decided to invade. I gathered a large fleet of cruisers, battleships, destroyers, and an aircraft carrier to protect my invasion fleet of 28 invaders, mostly modern armor. The Chinese and vassal navies were not able to force my fleet to retreat. After three or four amphibious attacks, clearing the city of Chinese defenders, I made a mistake by defeating the last defender and taking the city. Only then was I able to see the enormity of the task before me... hundreds of units responded to me taking the city. China recovered its city and I settled in for a long war of attrition. But I did not have to wait long, China sent 3 tactical nukes after me, one made it past SDI and my invasion force was gone.

Gone.

In retrospect, I should have gone to war with my continental neighbors to out vassal China. Is there anything I can do now to win? Or is it all out nuclear war?

I think only nukes can win against nukes.

Well. 28 modern armour is hardly an invasion force...

That said, you'd want to use your spies to find out where all his tac nukes are and wipe them out first with your own. Submarine launched tacs are your best friend.

Thanks AJ11. Everything people say on this discussion board really helps. Although I've played Civ4 this is only my second Civ4 Beyond the Sword game. I confess I didn't know subs can carry tactical nukes. I will try the spies and navy.
