boring early game

It could be that you're not exploring enough. Keeping your scouts alive to find all the AIs and city states is pretty important and requires some attention. You should be doing a lot of planning & strategizing too. Most importantly, you have to plan how to use your land in order to achieve your victory condition. And this all comes from scouting.

also consider bumping up the difficulty level.

The early game where it all happens. Everything that follows those first 50-100 turns is simply a consequence of the decisions you make at the start.

It can get repetative and a little dull if you're starting games over and over and over, but if you play through despite a less than perfect start you can suprise yourself and learn a fair bit too.

Sounds to me like you have a habit of abandoning games too early so you end up playing the early era over and over. ;)

Games where I rave in the earlier turns so much that I sleep quite late playing it, I quit on when it comes to the late game. "Cleaning up" ain't particularly fun, imo.

Late game is the boring part, for me.
It's already obvious what the outcome will be. Game design theory considers this busywork.

Ah, so thaaaat's what the Plantation tech is for! :D

Cheer up, unless you are playing on islands, Alex or Monty or someone will be along shortly to liven things up.

Alex, Bismarck, Sully, Kamkam, Monty, Patchy, Nubbu, all these civs are great for early-game boredom.
