I may get a medal, but only if I chose a victory condition everyone else ignored, again.
I expanded to eight cities, filling all the land within reach by galleys, and completed the Colossus in 275. My economy was tremendous, although it was a hammer-poor map.
In 660, I discovered the first of the Sons of Humbaba. I decided those islands would be off-limits until very late in the game, completely forgetting that the parameters of this game made them paper tigers.
My immediately neighbors were on very good terms with me, and I signed defensive pacts with ZY, Pericles, and Hatty. I decided to take advantage of those good relations and of the AP that ZY had built, to go for a religious victory. I libbed Astronomy in 1400 (losing a lot of gold by obsoleting the Colossus) and then I attacked Gandhi in 1430. Two sloppy mistakes here: Gandhi had become a member of the AP and the AP vote to end the war came on the next turn. Furthermore, I had failed to target the one Hindu city he had, so I had to defy the vote and suffer the unhappiness penalty of that.
Before destroying the Indian Empire in 1580, I discovered that Gandhi had settled on the modern armor island. How had he done that with a mere knight to defend it? D'oh! That's when I remembered one of the parameters of Noble difficulty.
I sailed out to attack Mansa Musa, next. War declared in 1615, with Mali conquered by 1690. For some reason, MM spread to other islands without ever building any other cities besides Timbuktu on his starting island.
I attacked DeGaulle in 1695 and conquered France by 1725. Along the way, ZY peace-vassaled to me.
Thanks to an AP vote to go to war with DeGaulle, I was back as a full member of the AP. After being elected resident, Hatty still wouldn't vote to give me a Religious victory. So she became my next target, in 1755. She capitulated in 1785. The next AP vote gave me my victory in 1802.
In analyzing how I could have improved this performance, I realized that the Pyramids could have really helped me convert my gold into hammers, running Universal Sufferage. DeGaulle built this wonder in 350. Could I have beaten him to this, using another city while my capital completed the Colossus? I replayed the game for fun, this time building the Pyramids in Seoul before starting the Colossus. I got that in 175, but in this game one of the AI completed the Colossus in 125 BC!
