I'm glad I started walking to the NE and find all the gold. I decided to settle on the southern of the 4 vertical gold sources with the 2 sea food. With the plain forest that gave a 10 turn worker, so at least could develop quickly early on. I also stole a worker from Hatty, not least to also be able to pass her territory and find East Germany. With aggressive AI she signed peace soon enough anyway. I could have sworn to have seen a longbow in her capital, although later she may have moved it or at least didn't see it again. Or maybe I saw it wrong lol. Anyway, she founded judaism and spread it to both Germanies, so by 1AD we're a pleased bunch on our continent, despite the early skirmishes.

Of course growing an empire was a bit harder, so I'm at just 6 cities and a measly 20 pop at 1AD. With all the gold however tech is going pretty well at about 124 bpt at breakeven, adding to that I got the GLH and Colossus and Oracled Civil Service. So tech is up to Construction, Currency, CS, Monarchy and Machinery, currently busy on Engineering. With the cruel lack of any strategic resources the plan is to conquer Hatty with trebs and a mix of longbows and elephants that she is trading unwisely to me for gold and the marble, when not needing the latter for a wonder. If I conquer her territory with the iron, horses, elephants and a juicy jewish shrine, things will be looking good. :)

I settled 2NE, but couldn't develop quickly enough. Lack of food hindered my expansion. I was still alive at 1AD.

Settled on 2nd-gold from the top, I thought I was on an island so I sent my 2nd workboat north to loop around only to find out I'm connected to the main continent. This delayed my 2nd and 3rd city so much. By 1AD I have 7 cities and only 20 pop, I have GLib and music GA but not much else going for me, tech rate is fine I guess but I thought it would be higher, cities are underdeveloped, yuck

I settled on the middle gold (i.e., all of them in the BFC, although there isn't enough food to sustainably work them all from the capital) and have 6 cities with 19 pop, including the 1-tile island. My northernmost city snagged one of the gems but I expect to eventually lose that to cultural pressure from Hatty. I just got the Great Lib and should have the Parthenon in 7. Like jnebbe, I got Music and the free Gt Artist, but I think I'm well behind nocho in techs. And yes, that was a magically early Egyptian longbow you saw. Giving us no strategic resources wasn't enough for the mapmaker, I guess; NZ just had to make things more difficult. ;)

I settled 2NE, west of that line of gold. By 1 AD, I only have 5 cities (with one more settler being built, which I intend to send to the island. I was trying for the GLH, but Hatty beat me to it.

I'm boxed in, with nowhere to go, and no good plan for expansion. Hatty is pleased with me; do I want to go to war with her, using longbows and cats? I might have tried for a culture win, but that's not allowed in this game.
