BOTM 80 First Spoiler - 1AD

This is the thread to discuss how your game went up to 1AD (not later).

What use did you make of your team of chariots? Do you think you are on course to defeat any of the Germans? Or have you actually managed to already eliminate Jorchen Löw's team? And - if you've met all the other civs - did you manage to figure out roughly the basis on which I picked the leaders and civs?

Reading Requirements

Stop! If you are participating in BOTM 80 (Sabella - Can You Beat Germany?), then you MUST NOT read this thread unless EITHER
 • You have reached at least 1ADin your game, OR
 • You have submitted your entry, OR
 • You have abandoned your game and will not submit.

Posting Restrictions
Please do not discuss anything that happened after 1AD.
Please do not discuss modern era resource locations (Copper and Iron are OK).
Please do not divulge your final result if that happened after 1AD.
Do not post any savegame file from the game. Discussions and screenshots are fine but not actual games.

Challenger save for more fun.

 • One combat II chariot died against Jorchen Löw's unpromoted one at 75% odds and another combat II + shock against a sole barb warrior at 97% odds while attacking a city. :gripe:
 • At 75BC, Karl Marx was about to get acquainted with ~15 horse archers.
 • Not sure how you picked the civs. In any case, leader features like Arnold being Phil/Pro and Merkel Fin/Imp feel rather fitting. :)

First thing I renamed my civ and leader, as I couldn't figure myself playing as Argentina ;) and now I'm playing as King Pele' of the Brazilians. :king:

My argentine chariots were sent to scout and defend against barbs, although only 1 is still alive at the moment.

I met 6 of the 7 AIs. Low as Napoleon is a funny joke. Merkel of Germany as Victoria I am quite not sure, but I suppose she's a popular leader in her home country, while the others (Marx, Einstein, Arnold, and Prince Albert) were examples of "germanic" people that ended up being more popular/successful in the countries they're leading in the game (Russia, America, America and England) than in their homeland in real life...

In the game I failed to Oracle CS by a couple of turns, but settled 6 cities including one by the elephants and just started a elepult war against Marx, with plans to go to England next. Those "germans" deserve punishment!

P.s. As the majority of the brazilians I was very happy they righteously defeated Argentina in the final! Congrats Germany! :goodjob:

Ps2 @DS: nice job with the game setup and the football field map!

All of the chariots are alive, 1 with 18 exp, 1 with 12 and 1 with 10. I used them to scout, prey on the barbs and escort the uu. But why is there no Messi?
Unfortunately I didn't defeat any German yet. I made a mistake, so Karl is smart enough to intercept the iron and build 1 tough axe in the capitol with wall. Though I destroy the iron city next turn, I have to stop war when I am about to have feudalism.
I think Karl Max is most popular in Russia because of his communism. Albert helps America build the atomic bomb. No idea on others, isn't Arnold Austrian-born?

I'm also playing challenge save this time, just hope that it can speed up the tech rate. I even researched alphabet to help AI, but they are still very slow. It seems the map is so big that every AI is busy with expanding the empire, which hampers the research.
However, it surprised me that in your game Karl can have 15 horse archers. How can the two games be so different?

I founded one sweeper city, 3 defender cities and conquered 3 middlefield cities. I may add one more defender for better defence then hire two strikers after AD 1. I think in this match, Argentina has to win by couterattack as the strikers are two weak.
I may not attack England next because I'm left footed. I may attack Arnold next then look for a goal from the left wing.

Those are *my* horse archers. ;)

2 chariots are dead... Both lost at favorable odds... One is alive.

I only have 6 cities, so expansion is sluggish, especially since two were recently founded. I do have education, so can start working on universities, but it will take another 30 or so turns to get the 6 I need up, so oxford will be quite late (mybe turn 155 or so?)

Still decied on what unit I want to use to break out... Maybe cavalry? Cannons? Grenediers?... Will see... In whichever case, the plan is to push pass white and red to about mid field, and probably settle in there for a space run...

Will not submit. I hate football:vomit:. Also dislike this map, maybe because I'm fed up with the stupid game (football, not C-IV).
Spoiler :
It's not even interesting to watch. Even a lousy ice hockey game is many times more interesting than a championship level football game.
I belive football is just a poor man's inadequate substitute for a real game like ice hockey. The reason these countries pay so much attention to football is simple: they lack a decent ice hockey team and so they have to pretend they don't care about the real game and push football to the masses who often don't know of anything better.

Overall, it was a very slow and inauspicious start for me. I lost two of my chariots to barbarians. I also captured a barb city near English territory in 1480 BC, only to lose it to a barb spearman in 625 BC. I recaptured it in 300 BC, but it definitely distracted me from a war against Russia.

I'm not understandig!
this game I started so confident. But my mistake was the opposite of other games. Before (in my initial games) I built an excessive army, wasting considerable time. This time I started the war with a small army, thinking the battles were mine. But I underestimated the level (it's seemed easier than normal to an Emperor') and had to gave up one turn before to conquer the 3# city, talking about Moscow :(. Well, it's another episode to learn (Oh! How many more will be needed? - The distance between the middle players and the unbelievable and experienced players are too spacious :worship:... - but my target is to reach it - even in the Civ5 or 6 [civ5])

I expected one that conquered all the western continent with unbelievible ease, but reading this, it doesn't happened. So, my game is still in the match, and I try a good score...!"

Man, I respect your idea, also I hate football :aargh: I agreed it's a stupid game. But, your comment was absurd. It's just a game, and your target here is be better than some players that never lose, and you know which I'm talking about :nono: (Do you get it?) .

Forget your "super ice hockey game and try to win some award! - guy, how arrogance :vomit:

Well, fiquei chateado! Tente traduzir isto. Se você não consegue ganhar dos melhores, o que lhe resta é falar bobagem! Acha que seu esporte é ´melhor do que os outros??? Quanta besteira! What a bullsh...????

I know that this answer is inappropriated here, but the idea of game is an opportunity to congratulate those are building the GOTM'S, and I think they are making an excellent work, making CIV 4 alive!

If @High King J. J.:worship: does not to want (the same with all that play and doesn't subbmit their games - the number is absurd) doesn't matter! I know that CIV 4 will still alive for some time...

Because the great work of some people :goodjob:!!!

+1
Aargh :aargh: I feel I played so poorly. Definitely too fast.

1AD stats: 3 cities, 2 workers, 2 chariots, 10 Qs, 62 bpt @ -11$/t

Failed to capture any workers (except 1 barb which I lost). Failed to chariot rush. Failed to build any cities. Failed to Quencha rush (except not quite - I did get two Barb cities with them).

Instead I built wonders: Oracle 1760 (t57) (metalcasting), Great Wall 1600 (t61), Pyramids 725. [but forgot to change civics until 100BC  ]
London has Colossus, Statue of Zeus, Great LightHouse; so he will be my first target.
Turn95 gave English metalcasting by misclick on demand.

Lost starting Q to Lion/Panther tagteam. turn 63: Lost a starting chariot to double German attack, didn't even see the units - must have taken a road. Chariot was exploring clockwise and around 5pm on way back.
Very clever map.

turn 27 missed out on Hinduism by one turn. :aargh:

225bc get 2nd city by capturing barb city at 6N1E (1W of gold).

:mad: 125bc lose two workers to barbarian warrior
How did that happen???
Oh, barb warrior moves next to my worker, so I move worker away and send another worker to same tile. IBT, city comes out of revolt, border expands, pops barb warrior next to my units (because Great Wall)

75BC use great Prophet for Theology. I had founded Judaism in 1200BC.
80BC capture 3rd city from Barbs (8S,2W).

Well, that's my highlights/lowlights. Hope for a pre-1800AD conquest victory.

The chariots added a lot of interest to the early game. I wanted to steal some Workers but at the very start the AIs seemed to keep their Chariots within their borders, so I switched to hunting animals (and later Barbarians) in order to level up. Managed to get all 3 Chariots to Combat III quickly and (much more slowly) the first Quecha to Woodsman III. All are still alive at 1AD.

At 2200BC finally was able to nab an unguarded Red Worker (hard to recall the unique leaders names) with one of the Chariots, and then was able to take a White Worker by defeating an unpromoted Chariot with on of my promoted ones and covering it with a second (hunting payed off).

Captured the Red capital ~1200BC with Quechas, declared peace, and came back to wipe them out in 425BC. In the meantime, wiped out the White empire with a mix of Quechas and Horse Archers in 550BC (they had a few axes so taking Red horses first was critical).

Notice Oracle was still unbuilt late in the game, and got it at 300BC for Calendar (odd move, but I needed those happiness resources). At this point, it seemed worthwhile to take a shot at the Green empire to meet the special challenge, so I started building Horse Archers and working on a very long road to get them there.

That's the worst thing I can image happening! Would have probably destroyed my computer if it happened to me.

Thanks for the sympathy. Even worse is I considered leaving the worker where it was because it would be safe when the border popped, but I moved it "to be safe" without considering where the barb would go.
I didn't laugh when I lost them, but did when I realized it was my fault.
