So how did your game after 1AD go? Tell everyone about your amazing victory (or your embarrassing defeat)!
Was the Mech Inf helpful? Did you manage to lose it?

I won some ridiculously late domination victory.

Partly it was going to be slow anyways.

Partly I decided to just accept the good ol' "backdoor" diplo victory. So I kind of sat around and waited to vote myself to victory....and waited....and waited.

Which for people who are actually good at the game or are competent, you will quickly know that you cannot vote yourself a diplomacy victory if you have enough population to win it by your vote alone (at least in beyond the sword)

But I bet I'll get the cow award!

I do not see me finishing this game. It was not exciting anymore.

First I expected the game to be very difficult with an isolated start but once I found everyone else I noticed they were isolated as well. I was already number one and rising.

Killed Rome/Tokugawa with my mech while they only had archers. Killed Persia with cannons and muskets/later rifles. Now I have almost three times the army of my closest competitor and will soon have artillery. Moving Galleon just takes to much time. Americans/Montozuma is the most dangerous opponent with Curasiers but I do not see how they would be able to put up a fight against artillery and riflemen. They might get cannons before they die but the game is won.

I might have continued the game til end if vassals was allowed.

Yeah, lack of vassals did slow things down, not being able to direct their research. I didn't get to Space until 1902. I conquered the Aztecs (to the NE) because they had the Islamic shrine and AP, which brought in some nice cash and religious-building hammers; it became my Wall Street City with (rather late) HQs for Mining and Sushi. Next was Germany--I forget why. Last was Rome because... Toku. And he was close. I went for Space figuring it was less hassle than dom/conquest but it certainly took longer, and I also made things more tedious than necessary by spreading Sushi to milk my score.

The Mech Inf was helpful because I never had to seriously worry about barbs, and he could crack the hardest nut in any city stack, but the lack of Blitz (multiple attacks) limited its impact. Probably a good thing or this game would have been a bit boring. But it also inspired me to add Blitz to a ship, something I've never done. Having a destroyer sink entire fleets of Roman caravels and galleons in one turn was very satisfying. :D

I did take out Toku with the Legacy and couple of Maces to help. Other than that, it was mostly barb cities. Without even attacking another one of the AI, I occupied 5.5 of the 11 major islands.

I spread Sushi - this map almost demanded it. However, I angled toward Diplo victory, and got some good breaks. I got 2 GE's, one I used on Taj, and the other I saved for the UN. I put the UN in a distant city near the German border. My plan to gift it to them and win the election worked, but the small size of the city slowed me down. At size 8, I finally could get enough hammers to finish the UN.
