With each patch it seems less and less fun.

I think its been downhill since 1.16.

Other than fixing the problems 1.17 caused, i don't think the list of changes 1.21 gave us were too spectactular. 1.17 was pretty flawed, a two month waiting period is a long time to play with a broken game. I wasn't very impressed with what was accomplished in those two months.

The tech trading changes were great, but now with 1.21, theres a 3-4 second delay every time i'd like to open up the diplomacy screen. Do this with 12-15 civs, every turn or two and it adds up. At least with 1.17 i only had to check one civ to see if a tech had become available, what a luxury. :D

I don't like the decrease in size huge maps recieved either. My opinion may change if we were provided an actual reason for it. Speed couldn't have been the problem since my game runs much slower with 1.21.

While easily corrected in the editor, i'm not exactly proficient with it, and this would exclude me from community events such as the HOF. It seems for the most part, players would rather not edit the game, but play within the rules given to them, like them or not.

I feel that as each patch comes out, they are gradually approaching the game balance that should have been there from the beginning.

In terms of the fun factor, I think Civ3 has always had one big problem: if you're losing for any reason, then it's not very enjoyable to keep playing such a long game knowing that in the end you're going to get flogged. But if you're clearly winning, I find the game becomes a tedious exercise in managing large numbers of units, just going through the motions, turn after turn, until you get some kind of victory. Makes me feel more like an accountant than a strategist.

Maybe I'm suffering from game fatigue. I've tried hard to like Civ III but for all it's enhancements, it has not gripped me as much as Civ I and Civ II did. I'm really not sure what's missing...

hi

yes i thought it was just me but i just don't enjoy the game...

i love the other civ games but this one bores me with it's "i don't wanna play one more turn tediousness."lol.

i just really believe the old adage don't fix it if it works........

i think firaxis pays reviewers.......witness sim golf. i got the demo and it's another tedious sim game with great reviews...
boring play. i think fun is the final thing that makes a good game..i'm not having fun with CIV3...back to MOO2.

Most of the people who are having *more* fun with 1.21f are *not* posting here. They're too busy playing. :smoke: :spank: :rocket:

Just hit the back button on your broswer. :)

I haven't had a chance to play v1.21 yet but with corruption gone, or at least reduced, I believe this will be the best version yet.

Funny comment about the difference with v1.17 tech trading being faster b/c all the A.I.s trade among themselves. :)

I agree Dinorius with much of what you said.

However, please withdraw your troops near my city cos they are frightening the women and molesting the chickens

1.21 is a darn sight better than 1.17 or 1.16. I prefer to play a peaceful game and try to build a tech lead, before this patch that tactic just did not work IMO.

No.Dice - try playing on a smaller map and see if you still have the slowdown it might be that your pc just can't cope as I've had no problems yet.

The only thing I don't get is the number of people complaining each time a patch comes out that the game has never been fun and never will be. Why?

If you don't like the game don't play...

lol Arioch - too true. it's all getting a bit apolyton.

i'm only on my third game, and thoroughly enjoying it so far. as far as the patches go, i've never seen any bugs/crashes anyhow, so no difference there. as for the other changes, they've all generally been positive.

i do get baffled as to how civ II could be better, though. can someone explain? i mean, isn't it just the same game with more things added?

i have to laugh a consistent whiners tho (and i don't mean the people on this thread, before you flame me).....go play something else. easy.

i especially like it since i discovered the mod that allows you to change the game ending - no more 2050ad endings!!

After playing a bit last night the slowdowns didn't seem nearly as bad, it just may have been my PC. 1.21 is a good bit slower than 1.17 though, still debating on whether or not i want to turn auto-save off. It didn't deserve as harsh a review as i gave it though.

I think the tech pace is actually faster than before, which i never minded. On Emperor difficulty, its 775 BC and 4 of 8 civs on my continent are in the middle ages, and most likely been there for a few turns. I wonder how much faster it would have been with all 16 present? If only pangaea would stop coming out looking like continents. :)

well ... no one mentioned before any patches .... u are new around these parts? welcome :) ... but dont even think about playing a game before a patch ... the game is broken, the modern air combat just does not work for the human player

but .... it is popular concencous that 1.16 is the best patch to date, but then 1.21 has only just come out and it does seem to be a little better than 1.17 ... with the biggest gripe the commpressed auto save is making the game slow down sooooo much (btw ... can u toggle that commpression off? personally .. i have NO problems with disk space 20gb of giggness just waiting to be filled)

Oh. So THAT'S why the game is even slower than before.

People had complained for months about the game being too slow - so Firaxis in its infinite "wisdom" MAKES IT SLOWER!! :crazyeye:

I agree, the game is less fun.

Not because of the patch but because of we know how to defeat the AI.

It's always the same, you start the game, the ai take a lead, you resist, you take the lead and win.

What would make the game more fun is ONLY scenarios and multiplayer.

[shakes head] They listened to the people that were complaining about saved games taking up too much room and you complain. They give you the option of turning it off so what is the problem?
I have to say that I would now give the game a rating of 9, before this patch I would have given it a 7 to 7.5. The ability to completely, or partially, get rid of corruption is what upped it so much. The inclusion of the game settings in the saved game is great IMO. The compressed games, even though I have the HDD space, is great. They have slowed down the A.I.'s expansion, great.

To make me the game a 9.5 to 10 they just need to get a functional MP and a good editor that allows you to make maps with set starting locations and scenarios. Not too much to ask for....I just hope it is going to be free.

It's making me insane.. but .. fun factor overall.. err.. I'm suppose to have fun with this? (hik up). Ok.. fuyn tyme!

I'm frustrated. I'm at war all the time. Constantly killing people.

I love to be able to play the stupid game another way.. just don't how. I build a bunch of barracks whatever.. a bunch of whatever kind of guys.. they go out..and .. kill something.

Hey.. that is kind of fun!
