bottom line..impressions on fun factor

More fun...I always enjoyed the game even from the beginning. When it ceases to be fun I quit. If I see that I have a bad location and am steadly going down I quit. This is where cheat mode used to be used. Get nukes and nuke them all then quit and start another game.

Firaxis stumbled with 1.17f tech trading, but 1.21f kicks arse - definently the funnest patch. Gameplay is better than ever before and settler dierrhea seems moderated. And the additional options are always a +.:king:

While the game is never, EVER going to be good enough to please everyone on any message board, I think it's been getting steadily better. I especially like the reduced Forbidden Palace costs in 1.21 -- it means I can build it in my enemy's capital WITHOUT a leader if I want. Stacked movement is nice, and while it may slow down the game a bit, I imagine the compressed saves will save on the bandwidth costs of sites like civfanatics quite a bit. And while I'm not sure what version they were implemented in, the special worker orders (auto-improve without modifying, build railroad to selected square, auto clear jungle, auto clean pollution) are very, very nice; having automated workers that I don't have to babysit increases the fun factor a great deal.

As for 1.16 being the best game version, I appreciated 1.17 despite the AI tech issues simply because it balanced out the despot rushing. Having a tremendous early game military advantage simply because you started out by a wheat on a flood plain got old. But since it was a change that made the game HARDER, I guess people don't like it.

Tip:

Game is slower since saves are COMPRESSED.

Turn off autosave feature.
That way it won't save every turn, and you save some time.

Impossible.

If the game crashes, or some other PC problem occurs, you lose everything.

If the stupid, braindead Culture Flipping occurs you can't go back to autosave and make some changes to prevent it. If some weird combat results happen you can't go back and redo it. If you've been always using autosave, now you have to remember to Save the game before quitting - sometimes you won't since you never had to before.

We wanted the game faster. So Firaxis in its arrogance makes it slower. Thanks for nothing, Firaxis.

"Fun"??? :vomit:

Try saving at regular intervals Zouave...
Also try building cultural improvements in your cities as this prevents flips...

We wanted the game better and more balanced. So Firaxis decides to try to make this happen. Thanks for free patches Firaxis.

I haven't upgraded to 1.21 yet but...

In the version I'm running now, corruption and waste is WAY THE F*** OUT OF CONTROL!!! It's unbelievable. I have a city that I captured that's not too far away from my capital. It has about 60 commerce arrows in it, but all but one -ONE- is corrupt. Same thing with shields. I put a courthouse in it and it doesn't do a damn thing. In the old game you could put down a courthouse and recoup half of your losses, but in this game courthouses don't do SH!T.

I've been told 1.21 has helped that sh!t out a little bit, so if it does it most certainly will make the game better.

Just finished my first game on 1.21f and that was pretty OK. It was my first at a tiny map (some practice for the tournament) so I can not really compare on things like tech trading (Chinese and Japs were in their coffin before there was a lot to trade and I wasn't to keen on trading with the Camelbreeders). The fast pace of a tiny brings a lot of fun, specially with 4 civs.

Main observation: when the final war started the Egypts threw a huge (I mean HUGE) pile of Infantry and obsolete units at a single city (Thebes, captured centuries before by my Indies). Hadn't seen that before. The defending force (Tanks, Infantry and Artillery) had that one down in a couple of turns. Elimination of their single source of rubber meant no Infantry or Tanks for Egypt and that was it!

On the HUGE pile, this one had a scroll button at the bottom saying More. And more was another halfscreen window filled with Infantry, Longbowman, Swordsman and the rest of the Kindergarden.

After all IMHO a 9 for this patch is well deserved!

Quick input from first games with 1.21:

1) Courthouses work great!

2) even without courthouses corruption is still bad, but waste is somehow smaller than before

3) AI-AI trade to 100% on Regent works just fine

4) made ancient techs more expensive, also reset map size factor for tech development - works fine since you don`t get the point where you develop Gunpowder but because of landgrabbing noone has even built a Temple yet :( BUG here in the AI, needs to be addressed!!!!

5) Combat a lot better with 1.21: lots of units everywhere means lots of fights. Finally the sample is so big that freaky occurences don`t matter too much. They happen, but often enough, and to both sides, that they even out!

6) Fun-factor is a lot better since now different playing styles are possible. You can flood the world with modern units when the enemy is still in Middle Ages - but then you`ll have weaknesses somewhere els. or you can flood it with lots of ancient units - and enounter modern Armour! Or you can out-culture the enemy. Or outexpand. Or whatever you like!

7) Culture flips work better now. maybe that came from 1.17, I never tried that, but now I can plan on a flip to happen and it usually will in an acceptable timeframe.....

all in all:

1.21 needs a few little fixes, but they can be done in the editor. Otherwise:

:D :goodjob: [party] :D

Go into the Editor and modify the percentage of corruption. I have tested it out at 0% and it really is 0%. But remember, you have to start a new game as the .bic changes are now saved into the saved game.

solarjetman, Zouave just proved your point. ;)
BTW, does your name come from the NES game Solar Jetman?
