I bought Gods and Kings the other day and I've been playing it. Recently, I closed the game and started it sometime later (I am playing via Steam). Now, whenever I attempt to play Gods and Kings, it just plays regular Civilization V. I've tried running the expansion from the specific expansion page on Steam; it still just starts regular Civilization V. I have verified that the DLC is downloaded and applied. I can't apply the DLC while in game (the option isn't present).

Anyone had this problem?

Things that might be causing it:
I have another download running in Steam?

I've reinstalled the game (and DLC), reinstalled Steam, restarted my computer, disabled background programs . . . why won't Steam run the DLC? I'm getting pissed, I payed 20 moneys for this. Actually, none of my DLCs are working; Cradle of Civilization, Gods and Kings . . .

I had the same problem.
I first noticed the game was updating when I tried to start it. It looks like the 'update' was the game 'patchig' itself back to vanilla.
I reinstalled G&K (just used autorun and the re-install option on the disc) and disabled autoupdate. After installation the game still tried to download something, but I was able to manually cancel the update. This seems to have done the trick and I can play again, but I didn't know if it will happen again when I close steam or reboot my computer.

Edit:
Have you verified the integrity of the game?

Edit:
And you haven't, by chance, disabled the DLC in the main menu in the game?

When it happened to me I just got the old vanilla start screen. I couldn't see any DLC option.

Started Steam again this morning to see if it happens again. It does, and this time the re-install doesn''t seem to work. I can't stop the update anymore before playing (maybe my timing yesterday was exceptionally lucky). I've tried steam offline mode, but it doesn't let me reinstall while offline. Now the game insists on downloading one gigabyte instead of installing from disc.
I'll check it again in a couple of hours.

Could you please rename your My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization V/ to "Sid Meier's Civilization V Backup", and restart the game? I'm wondering if your database was corrupted, which could cause the expansion DLL to not load.

I tried that but it didn't help.
After two weeks without problems it happened again today. I could play this morning but around two pm it decided again to patch itself back to 1.01.511 vanilla. It looks like this only happens on Sunday afternoons.

It looks like the problem wasn't with the game but with steam.
I've recently deleted and reinstalled my steam client and it seems to have done the trick.
