Brave Lieutenants and Capable Captains [IMPLEMENTED]

Is "Brave Lieutentants" a good addition?

I like the concept but I don't love the English term "Brave Lieutenants"

I think this creates an ambiguity with the term "brave". From wikipedia: During the American Indian Wars of the mid to late 19th century, Native American warriors of the Great Plains, sometimes referred to as braves.

I'm assuming this is translated literally from German. Could another name be considered to avoid confusion?.

I don't have great suggestions but maybe something like: bold, fearless, proven, or heroic?
 
I don't have a problem with Brave, but since someone did some alliteration on the Capable Captains it should clearly be Legendary Lieutenants :D
 
I think 'bold' is good because it is similar to 'brave' and saves one letter in an already long string with the long word 'Lieutenant'.
 
The Capable Captains I find vexing for the opposite reason, they spawn at your capital city ...
Yes, because I wanted to give the Players the choice for which Unit / Ship they will use the Unit. --> Flexibiliy and choice.
Otherwise I could have done completely without those new Units and just give some new Promotions and XP.

You could have done the same for the Ships ... it would have been the much easier solution.
Especially since with the Ships the graphic of the Captain is never part of the Ship graphic.

There are other reason why I do not like the change you suggest:

1) It wastes the effort which @Schmiddie had invested to create a graphic for the Capable Captain, as they will never be visible outside of Colopedia.
2) It ruins all options to have possible story events for Capable Captains as they will never be on a Plot / in a City as a Unit of themselves to trigger it.

The same discussion by the way could also have been had with Generals and Admirals ... as they also spawn in Cities and not on the field.
But well like always ... modding is personal taste. Where one modder wants to go left, the other one wants to go right. :)

Summary:
I strongly prefer the way it is currently implemented in the mod as it gives the Player the choice to which Ship he wants to attach the Captains.
Otherwise I could have implemented a solution just with Promotions + XP and no new Units ... which would have been much less effort.

Also I am not interested to have dozens of small Game Options in the mod just to support "personal taste" ... sorry but this is as I see it.
Thus I will not invest any effort of myself to implement this in the mod as a Game Option.

Still I appreciate that a community member invested effort to do do some modding of its own. :thumbsup:
I just do not consider it worth to invest my own time and effort to integrate it as a Game Option and possibly maintain it for the future.

But if any other modder wants to implement such a Game Option in the WTP core mod, go ahead. :thumbsup:
(But it is definitely a Game Option I would never use as I want to decide for which ship I can use my Capable Captain.)

Well, the middle-ground could probably be
- if a ship does not have a CC ->instant promotion
- if a ship already has a CC ->unit is spawned at capital

I do like both sides of this discussion, the freedom to promote any ship (even merchant ships who normally have a hard time getting XP) - however I find it sometimes tedious to move a ship from the other side of the map back to the capital just to promote it with a CC.

As I said, I like it the way it is and I will not invest any additional effort myself. Whoever wants to implement or improve something in the WTP core mod may do it in any way he wants.
See at some point a get a bit annoyed to continously turn back to change old stuff that alread exist and works fine ... instead of looking forward and implementing new content. :dunno:

As I said, the change suggested is simply something I would not like. - As it would take away or seriously limit my freedom of choice as a player.
E.g. I would just not like to have my Capable Captain be attached to e.g. a Sloop automatically instead of a Ship of the Line by my own choice.

Thus the only choice would be a Game Option:
- I consider such "Personal Taste Game Option" a bad choices for game design (due to the liability over time)
- I would not use it and thus am not interested in it being implemented (definitely not by my own effort)

Also as I said, I will not start (myself) to implement "Personal Taste Game Options" in general ... due to the liability and effort it will cause over time.
As in the end we would have endless discussions just to make everybody happy and endless effort to implement and maintain all those options ...

That is what modmodding is for: To allow everyobdy to create his own personal taste. - On the long run it is much cleaner than having dozens of variants in a single mod.
But if any of the current team members is interested in implement sth. different or better in the core mod, he can do so. (Incl. such a Game Option that I would never activate.)

My spare time and motivation to mod is not endless ... in fact it is currently extremely low.
The more I waste it on stuff like this, the less I will have left for other things in the mod.

Generally do whatever is worth your own spare time though ... every modder is free. :thumbsup:
(But I will not waste my little remaining spare time and motivation for stuff I just do not like.)

But to whoever thinks this Game Option is worth his time and effort to implement :

Feel free to create a fork in GitHub of current "develop" to implement it and share it as a Pull Request.
It can then be reviewed by a team member and merged when everything is looking good.

Any team member who has direct write access to core mod branches, could of course directly implement it.
Even though I am not a fan of such "Mini-Personal-Taste-Game-Options", I will not stand in its way.

I totally agree with ray. We should leave this feature as it is - I like the feature and the graphic. We should also NOT include a game option to change this!

Let's move on and concentrate on other things.
