Bring back the civ 1 newspaper!

Thats the best idea since the one I found yesterday! :crazyeye:

(actually forever)

I never played Civ 1 so I don’t know how the newspaper works in the game. It sounds cool though, so bring it back.

This idea sounds awesome!

The newspaper should be related with printing press, and it can inform you about stuff like MPPs and Wars and Economies, oh, what will be better is that you can have regional (cities) pages (stuff like starvation or baby-boom), provincial (if provinces are implemented) pages (stuff like trades with other provinces and weak/strong cultural influence), national pages (relations with other nations), and international pages (MPPs, countries with good/bad reps)

Some inaccurate information should be included (especially in international pages) as not all sources are dependable. Sources about one country should become more dependable as an embassy is established and/or a spy network is set up.

Spies should be able to implement false headlines in multi-player games (customized headlines optional, altho preset templates should be available for not being too time-consuming).

While watching a custom map load for Sim City 4, (15 minutes) it had tons of nonsense task titles. It would say things like "rebuffing grassland citizens" and "reticulating triangular tree groves" (examples). Semi-entertaining while waiting for a map to load. I then thought to myself, "you know, some 'mad-lib' style civ headlines could be quite diverse and entertaining."

for example:

(1) of the (2) demand more (3) for their (4)

1 = either: men, women, children, princes, soldiers, horses, rivers, or hordes.
2 = either: castle, plains, cities, hills, press, or nobility.
3 = either: water, wood, grapes, parties, children, or burritos.
4 = either: fiestas, stews, houses, gardens, ox cart, or store shelves.

Yeah, I know those. SC4 ones were pretty funny. Even before that, the loading scenes were funny; I remember the SC2K map generation screen:

Generating map
Reticulating splines (eh?)

Perhaps the newspaper could only start appearing once you have a publishing industry? That might give a little extra flavour for the modern age.

I'd love to see the newspaper as something we all could read while we're waitng for the AI to move.. It could pop up at the end of your turn; , you could read it (ofcourse, you'd be able to tell it to stop popping up; and see important AI moves (those near your borders/within your borders ect.) and read through about other civs and your empire while the game is dragging through those industrial and modern age movement intervals...
It should also tell you the progress of the AI on the wonders it's building

WARNING: EXTRA-LONG POST

I have thought of some ideas.

Newsworthy events would be declarations of war, signing of peace treaties and trade deals, conquests/surrenders of nations, the creation of new wonders, the construction of new cities, civil disorder, the unveiling of new unit types by any nation, random events including disasters, and revolutions and civil wars in the country and around the world.

Each would have its own short peice which you could read.

The assumptions behind these are mid- to late modern era Rome, capital at Rome, in 1802, where you are a Democracy with close ties to Greece, France, Egypt, China, Germany, and Russia and opposed to Communist Arabia, Carthage, Byzantium, Sumeria, Inca, Maya, and Iroquois, with the Americans neutral.

The header would read, "The Rome Tribune"
(it could say anything following the pattern [your capital][newspaper name])

You build world's first Modern Armor at Antium.

The entire Roman Joint Chiefs of Staff and President Caesar arrived in Antium this morning to unveil the latest addition to our nation's arsenal. The T-2 Trajan [i.e. Modern Armor] tank was built at the Leonardo da Vinci experimental factory and is loaded with some of the finest electronics and weaponry in the world with superior firepower and armor to the T-1 Hadrian [i.e. Tank, with a civilopedia link to the Tank]. The commanding general of the Antium garrison declared at the unveiling ceremony that he was deeply honored that these weapons, which he called "the future of the Roman Army" would be placed first under his command. International military experts were astounded after hearing of Rome's new weapon. Prime Minister Peter Romanov of Russia heralded this as "a potentially decisive weapon in the ongoing diplomatic struggle against the evil Sumerian Communist threat", while Chancellor Otto von Bismarck admired the technical genius of the Roman engineers. Chairman Gilgamesh of Sumeria stated publically that the Sumerian Army "would not be fazed" by this new weapon. In the meantime, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that they were building a similar weapon, but are considering buying several units of the Trajan if President Caesar agrees.

Your allies, the Greeks, build the world's first Modern Armor.

The entire Grteek Joint Chiefs of Staff and President Alexander Philipos announced this morning the unveiling of the latest addition to the Greek arsenal. The T-2 Pyrrhus [i.e. Modern Armor] tank was built at the Archimedes experimental factory and is loaded with some of the finest electronics and weaponry in the world with superior firepower and armor to the T-1 Ajax [i.e. Tank, with a civilopedia link to the Tank]. International military experts were astounded after hearing of the new Greek weapon. President Caesar heralded this as "a potentially decisive weapon in the ongoing diplomatic struggle against the evil Sumerian Communist threat", and pledged to give Greece "the highest price possible" for buying these weaponsand technical genius of the Greek engineers, saying, "only ours could do better". Chairman Gilgamesh of Sumeria stated publically that the Sumerian Army "would not be fazed" by this new weapon. In the meantime, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that they were building a similar weapon, but are considering buying several units of the Pyrrhus if President Philipos agrees.

Your enemies, the Sumerians build the world's first modern armor.

Shocking the world, the Sumerian High Command unveiled the T-2 Lugalzaggesi tank. Chairman Gilgamesh ordered the construction of the weapon [x number] of years ago. It is superior to the T-1 Etana Tank, but President Caesar, in a summit with Presidents Alexander Philipos of Greece and Cleopatra Ptolemy of Egypt and Prime Ministers Peter Romanov of Russia, Mao Zedong of China, Joan d'Arc of France, and Chancellor Otto von Bismarck issued a joint statement that they remained unfazed by this new threat.

Veii is in civil disorder

The city of Veii has entered major rioting on account of disgruntled citizens' complaints about housing and "poor services" within the city. The mayor of Veii, as well as the governor of Veii Province and the Home Secretary have urged President Caesar to act to end the violence.

Pompeii is leveled by a volcano

The tragic destruction of Pompeii ensued after Mount Pompeii erupted today. The death of [population of Pompeii] Roman citizens was mourned by the entire nation, and President Caesar personally surveyed the ruins and stated that such disasters were unpredictable and pledged that precautions would be taken to prevent such terrible tragedies from occuring again.

You get the picture.

Looks good, except that I'd base foreign responses, and even whether your own newpaper notes the new weapons, on /public knowledge/ of the weapon. Stealth aircraft, for example, were in use for several years before they were publicly acknowledged as real.
