Broken Install

Ok, so I was installing my game for the first time ever. I have Civ: 4 Gold Edition. At the point where it asks you to switch disks, I did. However, the installer just stopped working and became unresponsive. I waited for a long time, however nothing happened so I ended the task.

I tried to restart the install. However instead of giving me the install option, it game me the Play option. If I click play, the program immediatly quits. I tried to find the program in the add/remove program window, and I don't see anything there that could be it. I also searched across my entire computer, I didn't see Civilization, Civ4, Sid Meier's, nothing. Yet there is still something that makes it think it's been installed. Please help! I don't want to have wasted money. :(

Alright, here is what I believe are/is the error(s).

First we have a log where GameSpy Comrade is installed successfully. After that we have 6 sucessive errors.

Thanks in advance for your help.

the _is434 executable is apparently unknown to the internets (I tried finding information on it - but there are just no search results except for this thread). So I'll just assume that it is an installshield executable.

Try the following:
set windows to show hidden files
rename \program files\installshield installation information
to anything, e.g. \program files\installshield installation information old
rename \program files\common files\installshield
to anything, e.g. \program files\common files\installshield
restart the computer
try to reinstall
if that does not work: rename both folders back to their original names
if that does work: copy all contents of
\program files\installshield installation information old
into the newly created
\program files\installshield installation information
and delete both of the renamed folders.

Sorry, but I'm not quite that awesome with computers, so I'm a bit confused as to what you want me to do.

I'm not quite sure how to set windows to show hidden files.

Then also, I don't know exactly how or what you think I should rename. How do I get to "\program files\" And that other stuff? I'm sorry about being so difficult.

howto show hidden files

then on your desktop
double click on my computer
double click on your hard drive (usually called local drive)
double click on program files
right click on installshield installation information
choose rename and do so
double click on common files
right click on installshield
choose rename and do so
restart the computer
run the install

No luck. I tried all the options you said and every time, it said play. Anything else I could try, like uninstalling InstallShield and reinstalling or something?

No, but if you post a link to somewhere giving a general overview or tell me exactly what to do, then I'm pretty sure I can figure it out.

I'd rather ask you to do this:
download and install CCleaner - start it and click on registry then on scan for issues then on fix all issues - when it prompts you to save a backup do so (really do so ;)) - then have it fix whatever it finds.
then click on tools - click on uninstall - look through the list if civ4 is present - if so highlight it and click on delete entry.
then close the program - try to reinstall - that *should* work. Make sure when you reinstall that the account you are using is an administrator account.

I tried. It didn't work. Bummer! If you ever want to give up, that's fine. Thanks for trying. I really appreciate it.

Ok, I guess there's nothing to help. Ah well, maybe they'll let me return it and I can get something else. Thanks for the help.

I am sorry I did not respond - I am extremely tied up at work at the moment and won't be much of a help the next few days...
Right now I don't know what else to propose - though that is likely because I just don't have the time to think about it

Edit:
The problem is very likely a messed up installation key in the windows registry and its probably relatively easy to remove that if you know how - read about registry editing here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986

the most likely culprits are the keys referenced here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=324867
