BTS no longer working win 8.1 (CIV IV does work)

I switched my laptop from win 8 to 8.1 recently.

I'd installed CIV IV complete on win 8 64bt and had no probs running BTS.

I upgrade to win 8.1 (clean install of 64bt version) and noted BTS isn't compatible. I couldn't get to work initially but followed the win7/vista guide on this forum and the game was up and running fine on win 8.1. Last night tried to run it and loading screen came on but then locked at check XML point and a windows warning popup saying program has stopped working. Both CIV IV and warlords boot okay but obviously need DVD in

I've tried running BTS in various compatibility mode and adding BTS to data execution prevention ignore list but still happens

Since CIV complete was originally installed than windows updates in terms of system only difference I can think of is had to install older Net frameworks to get paint.net etc working but that didn't cause probs in win 8

Any ideas ?

I have BTS installed on windows 8.1 and is working in my case. What I noticed is that the MAF (memory allocation failure) is back even on 64-bit systems.

Have solved problem, but can't explain why.

I re run 3.19 update. This effectively uninstalled 3.19 (worried I was uninstalling whole of BTS but seems not). Then ran again and re-installed and I'm back in business.

Wiped all data during un-install but don't think corrupted game save etc was responsible but can't say whether you need to or not.

But this might help others. Note I followed the win 7 install guide in the first place so my game folder was never the default
