[BtS-Scenario] Discussion: Age of Discovery

1) A merchant unit. Spain transport a lot of gold from the new world. so if you have a unit, it could even use the great merchant graphics, that can do a trade mission (although much lower maybe 50 gold at most) that you can build from a special building that requires gold or silver in the city radius. that would be very cool.

There will be something along the lines of treasure fleets. :)

2) commodities. This is more of an idea I've been throwing around but instead of having wheat, corn, cows, in the new world have it so that you have to build farms and plantations in the new world to get these crops (using the discover resource thing like mines) that way you can build other colonies that create cotton and tobaco. a corporation modification that converts these resources to gold would fit nicely.

Hmmm...... that gets my mind thinking of an idea based on this.........

The Broodwar mod has the mechanism to found animal pastures with a unit.

I had thought of the same idea for a Colonization style mod for crops. GPs like a Master Sugar Planter could "plant" sugar in the New World. This of course would have to be limited by terrain type and latitude, so no sugar in Newfoundland.

Same idea with horse, cattle, etc. Master Horse Breeder...

Probably have to limit the total times these units could be created or bought so there aren't resources in every square.

For your mod, maybe they can only be built in Europe and transported over. Perhaps only in the capital?

This would more realistically model the introduction of new resources to the New World rather then just have them pop up there.

Work is progressing well. I hope to have something playable soon. :)

I have a lot of the XML done, but there's always more to go. :p

Great news Dale. Put me as the project lead, I'll get an educational job, and we can win the contest with this mod! ;)

Haha. Just volunteer for a non-profit historical society. Or better yet, start your own. "Woodelf's National Historical Preservation Society----preservation of history through gaming" has a nice ring.

I don't want to sound ungracious or in anyway selfish... not that that's not exactly what I'm doing... but do you have any idea when we can expect a playable BtS version of this incredible scenario? :-)

It'll be a few months away, that's for sure. I'm starting from the ground up, and with RL commitments time is at a premium. :)

I haven't played Age of Discovery before, but I'll make a point of it now.

I'm very intrigued by this Great Explorer unit - is there any gameplay benefit to me naming a lake TittyCaCa? Or just sophomoric giggles?

And that spreadsheet tech tree is a thing of beauty, should help me get mine in order.

I am fine with the current game's map size and all that. Some good ideas here, but what I would love to see the most is perhaps finding a way to kind of combine some of the features of Pirates! with Civ4 and Colonization. Original AoD kind of started on that line, but didnt go very far with it. Things like named pirates with special promotions and something that would automatically generate treasure fleets (like some kind of counter that went up as you "accumulate" resources from the new world) would rule.

Just another idea: Instead of the boring Civ4 trade routes, again, autogenerate the trader units at a faster rate, with the ability to do trade missions like a great merchant, only for a smaller amount of commerce. Note I said commerce, not gold - split the result according to the science/gold setting. Something like that was already suggested, but what I am saying is replace default trade routes with these entirely, and to avoid excessive micromanagement with it give the traders an automate mission that would send them on their way with one click (like a missionaries autospread religion mission.) And what fun pirating the suckers would be! And then, you could make it so when your military ship finally catches that scurvy pirate who has been holding up your progress, you could have the view zoom in for a 1 on 1 battle with the enemy captain in full 3d, with lots of barrels to kick and all the other classic swordfighting props... and.. and..

Ok, maybe I got carried away. But anyways, can't wait for this.
