Build Libraries Quest: Not Worth It!

So you get a quest that requires you build 12 libraries (on a Huge Map) to store your knowledge. You complete it. What do you get? +2 Science from your library, singular. That's right, you get +2 science to one library (in the city with your highest science rate). +2 science for a whole quest? Is that a joke? AFAIK, no other quest in the game gives such a poor reward. I don't know if +2 Science from all libraries is too powerful, but something better than a total bonus of +2 Science needs to be done.

It's alright if you have the Great Library, as it gives you another science specialist there. That's not great, but it doesn't certifiably stink.

Well I still think this needs to be changed in a patch. Considering the large effects of most of the other events like this, shouldn't the Library quest give better rewards?

Thing is though, of all the quests Ive had so far the Libaries on was the only one I was definatly going to do anyway. That is although I dont always build a Baracks (for example) in every city I always build a libary.

So I think that the low reward, for something I am going to do anyway, is OK.

I got the colluseum quest. Same thing. Instead I got +2 culture.

If you have the statue of Zues when you finish the colluseum quest, (The same as the Great Lib for the Libary quest), you get a bigger reward.

Again I dont think the rewards should be massive, for the same reason as above

colloseum is +1 more happiness from all your colloseums, not just one...
what are you talking about "same thing"... same thing as what? and instead of what did you get +2 culture?

..however, it is true that it is very little jam ...
perhaps 2 sciences to each library OR lump sum of 200 sciences immediately would be better...

How about +10% science for each library (so all libraries now give +35% science if you complete the quest instead of +25% like usual) OR getting a free Great Scientist (not just a free scientist specialist in one city)?

The problem as I see it, is that if the "Jam" was to become a lot bigger. Then in multiplayer games these would have to stop being "Ramdom" events and become rather garanteed events.

I mean +10% bonus per Libary is a world wonder size bonus, and therefore everyone should have the same chance of getting it

I don't have BTS, but methinks +2 beakers is kinda TBS. And I thought some of the world wonders out there were BS. And libraries in many cities is actually quite hard, especially since you need them built in production-poor cities and you don't get gold for failing ether. Oblivion? Not quite. But the reward does have to be epic, and yes, epic enough for it to be a viable choice in multiplayer. You spend hammers building 8 libraries and the great library, you better give me something that can hold up against equivalent number of swordsman (30).

Personally, I think the point is not to make it unbalancing. Libraries worth 35% science bonus? Too unbalancing. Maybe a free scientist specialist might be 'better', but need to be careful that these aren't unbalancing.

The +2 to one library is a little underwhelming.

However, I completed that quest the other night. But had also built the great library - which offers an additional bonus.

The reward for that was an extra free scientist in the great library - which is pretty cool IMO?

As a bonus, 99.95% sure the scientist persisted past the great library obsoleting. Felt like a balanced reward to me, considering I'd have probably built at least 7 of the 9 required libraries anyway...

There was a 3rd option as well, but can't recall what that was?

Reading what we suggest and making a pause, and going off-topic...
It makes me thinking that it is easy to discuss and rediscuss rewards. I try to imagine how it was at Firaxis when they developped the game. They should have spent hours and hours of meetings, talking about the same things we are doing now, with everyone having a different feeling, and perhaps doing this between 20h00 and midnight with the girlfriend/wife/husband waiting for the programmer to go back home for a few hours of sleep...
And the game have 1000s and 1000s of components with each of them interacting somehow...
There are many posts/threads complaining about Firaxis not having properly tested the game, but seriously, do we know another game on this planet that is that complex, that deep??...
I am sure a director of something at Firaxis said "ok, enough meetings, we need to produce something now!...", and a decision had to be taken...
Let us multiply the number of hours we have spent reading the forum, and multiply by the number of people we are ... it gives several man/years!!! No match for a private enterprise...

Perhaps when Spore will come, we will have a balance on the top of the layer for complexity and scope ...

I agree balance is the key, but considering there are random events that will just give you something many times more amazingly powerful almost for free (Like a free Great Artist at one of my border cities in my last game), completing a quest should provide a decent reward.

Hell, I think it'd be better if civilisations only got to use the reward of their unique buildings or units after completing a quest, or even if there was a mode that allocated a civ's unique parts in that way ("You are the first civ to build 7 banks- congratulations! These are now upgraded to Stock Exchanges!")

what do you lose in not completing the quest? Nothing? If there is no penalty for failing the quest, why should the reward be huge? it's simply a bonus that you have to work for if you want it.

until the quests are obligatory and neccesary to win, i dont think the reward should be that great.

this is clear that +2 science in one building is very dissapointing for a quest that may requires some great change in your strategy if you didn't have 12 city at the time you get it...+2 sciences in each of the 12 library would be more balanced...

if it's so dissapointing then dont do it. the game isnt forcing you to.

I think +1 science in each library of the empire would be a balanced reward for completing the quest... I would try to complete it if this was the case. Or +5% science in each library, that would also be interesting.

I don't think +2/library would be overbalancing. On standard size it's 7 libraries, 14 extra research/turn isn't going to get you that much, especially by the time you've got 7 cities.

I build the libraries anyway, so the +2 is a nice free bonus.
