Why do you care?
Why does the AI so godd**n angry at you for religious reasons when their religion ISN'T EVEN PRACTICED IN YOUR COUNTRY. Case in point: me (Gandhi) and Spain. India is mostly Jewish, with a smattering of Hindus, Christians, and Confucians. Spain is Buddhist, a religion nonexistant in my country. Nevertheless, Isabella is ALWAYS pissed off at me. Why? "We are upset that you have fallen under the sway of a heathen religion." For several centuries! Not until later, when I piss her off by not trading with her (I had to, Elizabeth could have invaded!) was there ANY OTHER REASON for her to be mad at me. All the time, I'm thinking, "Ok, be angry at me, but remember that THERE ARE NO BUDDHISTS IN INDIA! PLEASE! I'd consider converting, but before yelling at me for not doing it, SEND SOME FREAKIN' MISSIONARIES!

Thank you for your patience.

Hmm, interesting point. I don't see a problem that the AI gets mad at your religion even when you don't have it present in your cities though ... that's historically accurate. :) The problem may be that we don't have a possibility to "fetch" a religion that's not yet present in our empire. That's *not* historically accurate imho. Leaders often didn't care about the religion of their populace when choosing their own. Some may even have chosen an "alien" religion du to opportunistical foreign policy reasons.

Would it be better if we could adopt *any* religion, no matter whether it's present in ou cities or not? Or if we could "fetch" a religion - for example, send a missionary to a rival's city with a religion we don't have, then converting the missionary to that religion, then send him back home to spread this religion in our empire?

They think it should be practiced in your country and you should help it along. They aren't reasonable.

I see the original poster's point, though. I was next to Isabella recently so I knew what was coming ... if I didn't change to her religion, a war was almost certainly inevitable. Thing is, her religion didn't spread into my country, so I couldn't convert to it ... I wanted her to desperately send some missionaries in .. I would have converted in a heartbeat, and had this been an option in the negotiation screen, I would have picked it!

"Hey, Isabella, send some missionaries over and I'll convert to your faith!!!"

But no ... she didn't ... instead she grew increasingly mad and then invaded me.

@Oagersnap ... if you have nothing more constructive to say other than "Get over it", don't post, k?

Send some missionaries to Spain and convert her.

In cases like this, there seems to be only one truly satistfactory solution.

DESTROY her...

Do bear in mind that Isabella is extremely concerned with Religion - moreso than any of the other leaders (to my knowledge). If you're next to her, you need to be her enemy, or try to convert her, or actively try to become her religion, otherwise things get too annoying.

1. Convert to Paganism

2. Now that she's not pissed at you, make an open borders treaty.

3. Flood her with your own missionaries or wait for her to send some to you.

As long as you are with no state religion you can't get such diplomatic penalties.

you'd think it would be seperated into "-1 not using the same religion" and "-1 using a different religion". insted of just "-2 Using different religion". Because If i really believed that everyone should be realians, or whatever, getting someone to convert off of Shintoism to nothing is a step in the right direction but there's still work to be done.

fetch religion... I'm sure it's doable, considering what's been done with religious units, I saw one where settlers could catch religion from the city as they are built, another one where there was a unit that could remove a religion from a city (Inquisitor) ...

it sounds like it would be the job for an explorer..

The amount of penalty you get for being of a different religion is completely based on the leader. Some of them care more about religion than others. If you're of no religion, you get no bonus or penalty when dealing with them, if they're of a different religion you get a penalty, and if you're of the same religion, you get a bonus, exactly as it should work in your "conversion" example
