Me and a friend were playing a hotseat game and he started with four cows and by a river, however he built the city directly on one of the cows and it appeared as though he did not get the bonus resource in the city square... can anyone explain how that works? Because he did seem to be getting some sort of bonus (other than his civ trait bonus) in the city square, but it definatley was not the cow bonus...

We were both confused and hoping someone could explain it to us. Thanks!

A bonus that a city is built on doesn't get a bonus, unless the bonus is for gold. I have no idea how the the other apparent bonus you got can be explained. (I think it was his trait bonus)

Maybe it a was cattle bonus grassland?

The Four Rules of Building on Resources

1. Any resources which provide Gold bonuses still provide Gold under a city.
2. Any resources which provide Shield bonuses still provide Shields under a city.
3. Any resources which provide Food bonuses DO NOT provide Food under a city.
4. A city built on Bonus Grassland will, when it reaches size 7, gain an extra shield.

I didn't know this one. I have been avoiding building on top of a BG because I thought the benefit would be lost. This will help my city planning on my first monarch game in conquests. :goodjob:

It's still not a good idea to build on BG, since the benefit will be lost for a good part of the game.

What about if the only good position in a general area is on top of a BG? Would you still not build on top of it?

You must weigh the advantages vs the disadvatages. If building on a BG means for example your first city can get 2 food bonusses to make a settler fact, just do it.
If it means a city can get both iron and coal, do it.

There's one more catch. Trade bonuses on the city square don't apply to the capital. The capital already gets three or four trade from the start on the city square.

You mean that, if I build my capital on a gold bonus hill, I will loose the bonus?

This is extra nice to know :goodjob: . Thanks Cuivienen! :D

Pretty sure not. Remember a London on a Gold Hill, and it simply was impossible to count the bonus once it was a metro.
However, the bonus may get lost to the tile penalty in Despotism early (the capitol and SEA boni apply regardless of Gov).
