I'm somewhat curious this has to building roads myself. However, in regards to your initial production lists, I have to seriously disagree with your granary placement. Depending on your start location, it might be better build it much sooner, especially if you can make a four turn Settler factory.

That's alot of workers so early. Im guessing that many workers could really build some roads. ;)
 
Having another city instead of a granary doubles my expansion capabilities.

BTW i put my tech rate at 20% at start then lower it at 10% until i have 10+ cities with library
 
Having a vast forest near you helps a lot for raising your city's production
