Building Usefuless? or Letting a city sit idle

I stick cities on some wonder I don't want rather than build wealth, at least I get some gold back when the AI builds it

Potshot wonder building is another thing I do as well. As for building science, I agree it is a better return, but usually my tech rate is so absurdly high by mid to end game, I see no need to try and raise it further.

There are enough useful buildings to have a building to build most of the time. I just avoid happiness buildings beyond Circus and Colosseum (too high upkeep) and military buildings in particular. If you find yourself devoid, that usually means it's a high production city and a Wonder is in order. If that's not possible, usually a Settler or a unit I can't currently upgrade to (like a Bomber, or GDR).

Since I need to have strong military force I go for units not buildings. No matter what victory type I would like to achieve being powerful is the fist thing. After that I stick to buildings that I desire the most so if I am after cultural victory I go for temples and so on. No more building of everything available as it was in Civ4 :crazyeye: otherwise tons of lost time and maintenance will kill you (well, maybe on settler/chieftain it won't...).

The best buildings are those without maintenance cost so I always build markets, banks etc. Having tons of gold is a way to your victory :king: Another must have are happiness buildings and I build them as much as I need to keep the happiness above 0 :)

I must say I never build gardens and windmills and rarely go beyond barracks and walls for military/border cities.

I often find that there is no building I need in a city. Building military units to give to friendly city-states that are at war with other civs is kind of fun--I like keeping them busy! And building science is also good. I have never bothered with building wealth because getting a handle on the economic aspect of the game was top priority, now I'm usually rolling in gold throughout most of the game.
