Isnt there a way to make it so that when you capture a city, all of the infastruture that was in that city stays there?

if you're bombarding the city before invading, you'll destroy the improvements

some buildings, such as barracks will always be destroyed when the city is captured. i suppose this is because such buildings are part of or form the enemy's resistance against your attack. So these have to be sacked before you can consolidate you're conquest. and then afterwards you have to start building up your own military presence with your own barracks and so on...

also, in previous civ games i had the impression that one building was destroyed automatically when entering an enemy city. i don't know if that's still the case in civ III

Barracks are kept, actually. Anything that produces culture except for Great wonders are destroyed. That means things like granaries and factories are kept. However, the AI might sell off those improvement before you get the city.

The only way to make it so that cities come intact is by disabling culture. I don't think you want to do that.

Barracks aren't automatically destroyed. Buildings with culture are automatically destroyed.

:hmm: my mistake i suppose :mischief: Actually, I most often raze cities  . I only occupy cities during early conquests so maybe most of these dont have barracks yet. later i simply pursue a scortched each policy

That is correct but I think Tomoyo forgot to mention if you take over a city with a wonder in it you won't get any culture from it. You will still get the benifits and it will become a tourist attraction but you won't get culture from a wonder unless you build it.

The best way to capture an ai city and getting some building in it, like barack, marketplace, bank, is to attack it fast and within 1 turn.

So use fast units only, do not slowly invade their cultur with foot troop, neither bombard them, they will have plenty of turn to sell their building.

A stack of 12 knight or cavarly will take any city within 1 turn.

Great Wonders are kept, but no longer generate culture. If you recapture a lost town in which YOU built a Great Wonder, culture generation will resume.

Ordinary buildings generating culture (temples, libraries, etc.) are destroyed, when a city is conquered.

Other improvements (barracks, markets, harbor, etc.) are destroyed with a certain probability. I read an article once with more details, but can't remember them.
