bullied the AI

So I have a pretty big army amassed, about 30 cannon, 20 cavalry or so and 12 musketmen/riflemen to defend them. I research refining and lo and behold, I don't have any oil on my land. China, my neighbor to the east has it, and america, my neighbor to the west has it in a city just 3 tiles over my border. So, I see america has 2 extra oil. I ask them to trade and see what they will take for oil. They say it can't be done, so I demanded they give it to me, and they did! I guess they knew I would destroy them if they didn't give it to me. Completely suprised me, and they are still polite towards me.
 
I've never tried that since playing Monarch level and beyond... (usually because I never have a superior army, or if I do the option is often better just to crush the opponent rather than bully.) But I'm glad to hear that it can and does work.

Does anyone else have other good examples of successful bullying?

War is not dishonorable, so threatening a war would not be dishonorable either. You would be looked upon as a bully, but not necessarily a dishonest one.

I usually use the "renegotiate peace" option, so I can declare if they won't give in to my demands.
 
Like Zachriel said, renegotiate peace. Contact a civ and click on 'active'. Then click on peace treaty to renegotiate peace. However, if they are stronger than you, YOU must pay them to keep peace.

If after clicking on the peace treaty select 'never mind', this declares war (make sure none of your units are in their territory). You will be brought back to the diplomacy screen where you can then select 'we would like to propose a deal'. This is in effect a 0-turn war and the AI will be more willing to give up things like cities! (this is considered an exploit by some people). The 0-turn war does have more of a rep hit, though, but not as bad as breaking a treaty or ROP abuse.
 
Thank you for explaining the 0 turn war. I had read something about it, but didn't know what it was.
 
Must try out the 0-turn war! :)

I would disagree with those who call that an exploit. It reminds me of Adolf Hitler's style of diplomacy - break the adversary's nerve and have him crawl back to you with offers of appeasement. All without firing a gun. Quite historical, really! ;)
 
You can get 2-3 size1 cities without resources in the vicinity from the AI with the 0-turn war.

Hehe, went home and successfully renegotiated a peace treaty to my advantage. Nothing big, just convinced the French to pay me 9 gpt and hand me their (worthless) world map (it's early middle ages, so 9 gpt is still something). It surprised me because they only have one city on my continent and although they're the weakest civ that i know of in that game, I'm not really in a position to hurt them that much. Perhaps I'll try a 0-turn war once the current deal runs out.

My conclusion is a) don't bother with the threats in diplomacy (the "take this deal or suffer!" line) - renegotiating peace is much more elegant and likely to get you at least something (plus you then get the advisor to help you out); and b) keep up the pressure on all those weaker civs around which you wouldn't mind bashing if they ask for it.
