Carter only merits an 8? Who gets a ten in your book?
That is the point. I admire Carter enormously. But the idea here is to make the grade very steep. By that token there has been only one 10 in history, a couple thousand yeas ago. If you take Gore's demonstrated willingness to say whatever the observer wants to hear and put it at center, then place the standard for his party only 3 notches higher, IMO Clinton still falls off the edge.
Funny, I would NOT vote for Gore over Clinton (I would certainly have taken McCain over Bush though...). It has nothing to do with honesty and everything to do with authoritarianism. Gore turned me off long ago when his wife started labelling record albums for us. He'd have gotten in and spent the first year trying to do too much to change the system, and then IF September 11 happened with Gore and Lieberman in charge, why FEMA would be escorting every citizen to work and the mall every day by now.
What can I say. To me, character matters. Bush has blots on his, but has also shown an awareness of where they are and a willingness to deal with them. He is a straight talker, while Gore is a typical fast talker. Either is to be prefered by someone willing to put his own interests ahead of anyone elses, including the country as a whole. Clinton was very smooth, and extremely practiced at covering his a.., um, attitudes. I suspect that we will be unearthing little pieces of damage done during the Clinton presidency for a generation or more.
Whereas Clinton would have said "Don't worry", we would have stopped worrying, and he would have secretly committed troops all over the world and quietly altered the constitution and gotten just about the same results as Bush but with cleaner underpants for me...
This is supposed to be a GOOD thing right? If so, why is one of the greatest criticisms of Bush that no one knows what he is doing. Not a valid criticism, to be sure, but common. In any event it runs counter to my recollections. Clinton always seemed to trumpet the danger, take some military action (likely of dubious value, eg shooting missiles into empty buildings), and THEN say "Dont worry."

That's a very strange view to take.

But one based on careful consideration of the real record. Clinton it was who got the "Patriot Act" in which increased the governments ability to bypass civil rights when investigating "terror". Clinton committed more troops around the world than any previous president, usually not for very high moral reasons (in my opinion, high moral reasons are usually the last ones considered in committing troops). Clinton led the federal government to kill American citizens at Waco and Ruby Ridge, and the media in the age of Clinton whitewashed the real facts in the McVeigh case- painting him as a white supremacist when he wasn't, but it sounded good and let everyone hate him for the wrong reasons. If you wanted to be "conspiracy theorist", Clinton had as many questionable incidents and freak coincedences as Bush. But what he never did was put on an ugly or an angry face. He never speaked the rhetoric of American supremacy, just quietly acted on the principles. This is why some posters are burned up at the fact that Clinton is revered overseas when he did as much harm overseas as any president. Clinton was a master of image. And that soaring economy, I really feel it had as much to do with the illusion in the average citizen's mind that "all was well" as with any specific program or the emergence of dot coms.
Americans want everything to be all right. For eight years Clinton dealt with alot of threats to our security without bothering us with the details, same as Reagan thought he was doing in the 80s. I guess in that sense I am starting to see that Bush is indeed "more honest"... maybe too honest about some things...
