But I want to try the Spanish!

Hello anyone who can help me!

I have installed all the patches up to 1.61 (no small feat for a dial-up connection), and purchased a Radeon 9200 card on my 512 MB RAM 2.8 gig computer. I have been playing Civ IV for about a month now, and have had only occasional lapses with the video card. I have admittedly been fond of playing Catherine of the Russians.

Recently, just after downloading the 1.61 patch, I decided I wanted to try a new Civ. I tried the Spanish, and right upon beginning the game, where it would normally zoom into my settler and scout, it froze, and kicked me out into the VP recovery screen. After several attempts, I found I CAN be the German, Aztecs, or Russians who start with hunting and a scout. But I cannot start a new game as any of the "non-hunting" civs like Spanish, English, French etc who start with a warrior... I can also load any game just fine.

Weird problem? I thought so. Of course now that I can't be the SPanish, French or any of those, I really WANT to try playing them. I have tried lowering the acceleration and other wierd fixes. I'm not completely computer savvy. Is there something I have missed?

P.S. you might have to dumb it down for me. But if you think of anything, I would really appreciate it!!!:D

perhaps you installed some mods? remove them!

Also... you say you can load each save. An initial autosave is created when you start a game. Perhaps you could check if you crash before or after that save (and perhaps you can try to load that save..)

I have not loaded any MODs, unfortunately. I don't know how to just yet.

I will try the initial autosave thing. I wonder if that would work!

Thanks!

Bad news...the autosave didn't work, so it must happen before the autosave.

I'm not sure if it helps diagnose the problem any, but any civ works if it is in my initial background. It is when the screen has to zoom in on the start-up position of my spaniards...that is when my graphics card stops responding.
