Well the situation has arisen in another thread, what shall we do if it turns out we are by ourself? are we just going to scream cry and hide away for awhile?

I think we need to start searching the sea's and for this reason i think we need to grab fishing (allowing us to scout with work boats) before we go for writing-it will only be a few turns and i doubt another team will have the idea to build the colossus so wont put us back too much.

However that is just my idea, anyone else?

I am fine with that fishing is very cheap, so our queue will be:
Animal Husbandry
Fishing
Writing
Metal Casting

Correct?

Yep, think its about 7/8 turns till AH now. so fishing shouldn't take too long.

I also think we should break inbetween our settler/worker production or whatever was planned at size 4 to build a work boat.

pushing back metal casting will risk the wonder...
I think you can have fishing or writing not both before MC in order to ensure the wonder being built.

OH and since I am thinking of this as far as The Great Ligthhouse..Piffle will probably go for it.

BECAUSE..2 members in high positions (Tubby and Whomp) on another team is very very much in love with The Great Lighthouse. So I think they will be going for that and may have beelined to sailing even before BW. Chats on about civ can be quite informative...

But then that means we're highly unlikely to have a work boat out exploring for at least 50 turns.

Fishing will likely take 6 - 8 turns, that really isn't too much...

btw, what speed are we playing on?
edit: its normal

re: work boat...do you understand that you are sacrificing long term commerce for exploration if we dont get the wonder. We loose massive amount of gold inexchange for a work boat.

I think if we are alone we will need the commerce boost more than meeting others.

Rigth in the end even our best friend is going to have to kill us or defeat us somehow.

I wonder if you can win by going an isolantionist route. Just throwing it out there...Space, or culture would be good isolationist tactics. ALSO has anybody found a religion yet..have you checked the religion screen

Only Buddism has been founded fron what i remember.

If we are alone, a religion would be good but not the be all and end all.
One of the lessons i learnt from the pitboss game was that not all wonders get built in all human games. I was able to build the hanging gardens in 1080AD (or something similar) and it only cost me 4 turns to build, but i got an extra 7 pop points. So even if we don't focus on a Wonder its always good to keep an eye on them as we can always pick up a bargin later on.

Now 3 things i learnt from my single player where i was alone on a continent is to keep the expansion rate up, i made the mistake of not rushing because i figured no one else would beat me to the land. It wasn't bad because i was developing existing cities faster but i took it too easy in that respect. The other error i made was not building up my navy early enough and got caught when i got hit by a 2 pronged attack. Even basic naval units can act as spotter and its a lot easier sinking 1 galleon then killing 3 cavs.

Finally despite having 11 cities on the continent only 4 were coastal and 2 of those were economic cities with little production so my navy was constructed in only 2 cities (which were next to each other) which gave my problems. I had focused on building cities on ideal locations to maximise gold/food/production meaning i had 3 cities a tile from the coast. In retrospect i should have scrificed some of the output for a more strategic location, so if we are alone then we need to have a good percentage of cities on the coast.

So Robi..a priority would be to put a coastal city on the opposite shore of our island. One at the sothern point and a northern one too. ( at the very least)

Also I think we keep expanding as fast as possible..whether we are alone or not. As long as you are running 70% or higher with a positive income you should expand. Around 60% you stop unless you need a resource. Then as your cottages grow you can expand more. Works for me usually. REX is not dead in civ 4 its a controled REX..

Yes we will need a good number of coastal cities if we are on a island alone, but they also have to have good production. At the very least we will need 1/3 of our units to be naval as we take up all the land, so we will want as many cities as possible to be able to produce them to spread the load.

No, is the answer to that really. As soon as the other teams notice that we are getting ahead they will join together and take us down no matter what. the civ3 MTDG shows that teamwork is vital between teams.

Therefore i think it is usefull to go out and make friends. It is also fairly safe to assume from the little score jumps every other team has been making that they are not researching anything major-so i think we can go for the 6ish turns it'll take to research.

With civ 4 there isn't the urgent need to find someone striaght off because you can't trade techs until alphabet. I agree that when we can we should go out and meet people and find friends. As BC brings up in the civ3 mtdg friends are very important in the context of the game. Another thing that it brings up is that you teams have better relationships with team on other continents then with the one they share a continent with. If we are alone then i think its a major advantage to us for that fact alone, because that could leave us in the position of being the 'swing vote' for lack of a better term in any war, hot or cold.

Well i think we should grab writing first, then see what the situation is with our exploring warrior, if need be we can grab sailing quickly then head to metal casting.

We should definately continue on as if we have someone on the continent until we are sure that its not the case. There is no penalty for interupting research midstream so its easy to swap stretegies quickly
