"BBW, with Dinos" C3C Mod

** 2005/08/15: NEW VERSION **

Download: 11.0 Meg ZIP File 10.1 Meg RAR File

This is my C3C "Bigger, Better Worlds" mod, with an updated version of the Saurian civilization from my C3PtW "Dinosaurs & Libertarians" mod thrown in just for fun. In order to play it, you'll need to have both "Play the World" and "Conquests" installed, as the latter doesn't include the dinosaur animation files.

(Please note that this mod will not work on its own; you need to have also installed "Bigger, Better Worlds.")

GENERAL NOTES:

Unlike in "Dinosaurs & Libertarians," there are no "dinobarbs" in this mod. Other than the fact that the Saurians exist (and that the Dinosaur Park wonder has been replaced by Panda Park), "BBW, with Dinos" is exactly the same as "Bigger, Better Worlds."

The Saurian civilization is playable. Since the Saurians routinely enslave humans for use as labor (and probably food), the presence of human advisors and specialists can be overlooked as being at least somewhat justifiable.

And speaking of enslavement, Saurian workers are extremely slow. To get efficient workers, humans must be enslaved.

The Saurians replaced the Zulus, by the way. My apologies to those who like to play the Zulus, but somebody had to go to make room for the dinos.

I know, previous discussion of this mod was in the "Dinosaurs & Libertarians" thread. But I wanted to give it its own thread for two reasons. First, it's no longer just part of the "Bigger, Better Worlds" download; it is in fact a separate download. And second, I'm going to be updating "Dinosaurs & Libertarians" within the next few days, so it's going to need its thread back. ;)

Version 2.10 (5/12/04):
- Made changes as in "Bigger, Better Worlds" 2.10 update.
- Shifted files from "Bigger, Better Worlds" folder to "BBW, with Dinos" folder, so that the mods are now separate downloads.
- Updated Saurian city graphics.

hello i don't have ptw c.d but the dinos are available to download from the firaxis site, if i download them do you think they would work in this mod if so where should i download them to. At the moment i am playing your mod w/out dinos and enjoying the game a lot i think you have done a really good job with this and apreciate the work and thought you put into

Otros: Yes, you can simply download the dino units if you don't have PTW. The dino unit animation folders (there are twelve of them) should be placed in a "civ3ptw/extras/prehistoric/art/units/" folder. (Alternately, if you're only ever going to use them with this mod, anyway, you could just put them into the mod's own "art/units" folder....)

I intend to download your BBW mod with Dino's tonight. My 8-yr old nephew will play any game with dinosaurs in it, so he should have a blast with your mod.

It occurred to me (middle-aged geezer that I am) that you could look to old episodes of "Land of the Lost" for inspiration. Those tricky sleestaks :P

ALthough, I do sympathize with your slippery slope. Next you'd have a tribe representing "Planet of the Apes", then Transformers (more than meets the eye), Martians (the Flash Gordon variety), and of course those mischeivious Pandas..

Eek!

Hey Darryl - first off, thanks for all the hard work you have put in on your "Bigger, Better Worlds" MODs. I loved playing as the Saurians in Civ 2 and was thrilled when I discovered your Dino MOD.
I've been playing a game as, what else, the Saurians and encountered a problem when I went to look at the second level of the Tech tree. I had just finished researching "Naval Ordnance" and was asked what I wanted to find next so I clicked the "view the big picture" option. I then got an error message "file not found 'art\civilopedia\icons\buildings\encyclopedia-small.pcx'".
I searched around but could not find this file anywhere in my Civ 3 folder - in fact, there was no "buildings subfolder under the "BBW, with dinos" folder. Where can we get this file or a correction?
Thanks again.

Sounds like you downloaded the updated (as of 7/22) version of "BBW, with Dinos," but still have an older version of "Bigger, Better Worlds." You've got to have both up to date (or at least at the same version if not up to date), as the former utilizes a lot of files and graphics from the latter. The "Encyclopedia" wonder was just added in the last update, and so if you didn't update *both* mods, the graphic is missing.

Bingo, you hit it right on the head DB! I downloaded the updates for both MODs but, since I wanted to play the Dino one first, I only updated it rather than updating both.

Now that I updated the 'original' "Bigger, Better Worlds", my Dino game is running fine.

Thanks for your help and keep up the great work!

UPDATE

Version 2005/07/31:

- Made changes as in "Bigger, Better Worlds" 2005/07/31 update.
- Increased Saurian settler population cost.
- Added sounds to the Panda unit.

REMEMBER: If you update "BBW, with Dinos," you must also update "Bigger, Better Worlds," as well! :)

Darryl, I just downloaded the the latest versions of both your MODs (Bigger, Better Worlds and BBW, with Dinos) and installed them from scratch (i.e. I completely removed the previous versions).

When I then tried to continue a saved game, I get an error that the program can't find "bbw, with dinos\test\pedialIcons.txt: tech_expansionism".

I noticed that this tech is not longer found in the tech tree for the Saurians - did you remove it? Can the Saurians now start building settlers without first researching this tech?

It's generally safe to assume that when any mod is updated, older saved games will no longer work. That's an inevitable byproduct of the fact that updating involves adding/deleting/moving/renaming/changing techs, units and the like.

I get an error that the program can't find "bbw, with dinos\test\pedialIcons.txt: tech_expansionism". I noticed that this tech is not longer found in the tech tree for the Saurians - did you remove it? Can the Saurians now start building settlers without first researching this tech?

Some of the changes in yesterday's update, as can be read in the "Bigger, Better Worlds" version history, are the removal of the despotism tile penalty, the adjustment of some tiles' food production and some resources' benefits in response to that alteration, and the removal of the Advanced Settler unit and the Expansionism tech from the mod. Since Expansionism no longer exists, Saurians can now build their settler units after researching The Wheel, just as can other civs.
