Today, I was just wondering about ways to improve the feel of Civ4 (by the way, great game :mischief:). And I thought of something, I dont know if mentioned or modded already.

I think it would be better if the date of year is unkown until researching Calender. I think it is obvious that the barbarians didnt't know it was year 3500 B.C. when a Lion swallowed their Warrior. Plus, with this imrpovement, the research of Calender becomes more vital and useful (I know because I only use it when I have the free research time).

Plus, this idea could be fun for story telling. You would literally have to say 10th turn my axemen was killed by Aztec army. Or if you are actually creative :p, something like, on the 10th moon of our civilization, our axeman falls against the Aztec hordes.

I just think this would be a great feature (or mod) to Civilization! :goodjob:

Wouldn't you be able to tell what year it is by the number of turns you've taken, anyway?

What I'm trying to say is that the DATE at the TOP-RIGHT should be HIDDEN until CALENDER.

If you can tell what year it by number of turns, good for you. Its just realism. :)

It doesn't show if you turn on the clock in options. The year gets replaced by the actual time. You could turn the clock off again when you get calendar.

I guess I just don't see the point of hiding the date when you can easily discern what year it is by counting the number of turns you've taken.

I guess you could always take a little piece of friction tape and put it on your screen where the date shows until you research calendar, if you must...

That's actually not true, the display alternates between RL time and in-game date if you turn the clock on. At least, it does for me!

Well then! I've never played with the clock displayed, just checked it out briefly. I stand corrected.

Guess he'll have to use stickytape on the screen then! ;)

Thats simply useless, you can just open the victory options screen anyway....

Yeah, I see your point that it's silly to have the year showing before your civ knows the calender. Then again the BC/AD years having nothing to do with when Christianity is founded in the game. In my opinion the game shouldn't tell you what year it is, just the era (as represented by the person with the highest level of tech). So instead of 500 AD it would just say "Medeival Age" etc. That would make more sense and would also end all the "why does it take 200 years for my swordsmen to walk across my country" complaints.
