Can any of the pro's help?

about the re-loading thing. i think not rloading a game at all, no matter what can just get you stressed out and fel like quitting th game. i reload if the biggest civ declares war, and althoguh i do try and survive, if i lose half my cities, ill reload.

Maybe you could make some of your citizens into specialists to buy some time.

I dont have communication with the Mongols so I cant do the 'republic' thing. I'd be suprised if they didnt already have it anyway as they are the 'civ in front' I would guess by the things they have built.

Looks like i'll build a Colosseum instead :(

I'll keep the trick with the workers in mind though when the Sistine Chapel comes around.

As for the 'good natured ribbing' for having the sheer audacity to reload a savegame - why bother saving the game AT ALL if you never reload it anyway? Just play Iron Man with no saves or Autosaves then, just end of session saves then game exit.

Besides, its hardly cheating when the outcome is inevitable anyway...

And thats my last thought on the matter.

It might still be worth declaring war (if you can). The AI can be incredibly stupid sometimes.

Personally I like the "take whatever comes" option but I have been known to play the odd game of "halved corruption" for a restful change :).

It's your game. Just have fun

Ever heard of computer crashes and program freezes? Autosave is my little insurance against game-external accidents.

(NB: I'm not a Deity player. I fairly reliably wins on Monarch, but struggle badly at Emperor. I still never ever reload because of things that go badly in-game - I didn't do that back when I was struggling at Warlord in Civ2 either. It's simply not my way.)

All my comment meant was that to correct this problem, GreyHawk would have to reload a save from several turns ago, but that providing he has the save on hand, he obviously wouldn't object to it, since he's already cheating anyway.

I wasn't speaking disparingly of his style of play, simply calculating which options he would and would not find to be an acceptable solution. I have no problem with people cheating by reloading from previous saves, by using external tools, or by modifying the save binary, if that's what they want to do. It's their game, they paid for it. Nor did I say there was anything wrong with cheating, or speak disparigingly of it in my post.

If anyone takes offense at use of the word 'cheating', then perhaps they should consider that in Civilization II, they had a "Cheat Mode". So, there is a strong precedent for using the term 'cheat' or 'cheating' to describe actions which are designed to manipulate the outcome of the game in ways that diverge from the normal flow of the game.

amateurs do it for love (amo, amas, amat) of the game.

So the professionals do it for reasons other than love (of the game). Often for money, but most of the professional Civ players aren't paid in cash, check or money order. They get their gratification in other ways. Its nice to feel superior, even if it is only a game,

Egos are fragile things, some people (no names, no pack drill)
have a lot of ego tied up in this game.

The people who get paid to play Civ are mostly game design company employees. The testing probably wasn't that much fun, for them, or maybe there wouldn't have been all thos patches. Or maybe it was, and they realized if they left things to fix, they could keep playing the game and continue to get paid for it.? Its a theory, it doesn't have to be right.

I got the Sistine Chapel by adding workers so thanks for that advice. My city is generating a pretty high culture per turn but nowhere near enough for the 20K thing. How do you get it really high to hit that target? All my cities have rush built Cathedrals and Colosseums in them and I'm beelining for all the cultural techs. Free Artistry is my next target.

@Sirp, OK - I may have over-reacted a bit, sorry for that. Lets let it lie shall we?

So are you going to shoot for the empire wide 100K now? If you can get to the Internet first, it and ICS assure a cultural victory.

Do the Mongols already have knowledge of the Republic? If not, gift them the tech and they'll immediately change government and fall into anarchy, thus wasting some turns of production, allowing you to complete the HG before them.
Whoah, that's a pretty sweet idea. I had never thought of that before. Has anyone actually put this tactic into practice? Does it really work?

Yes it works. Some players organize an invasion force to attack their opponents when the AI goes into anarchy after the player gave the AI a government tech. Just check your military advisor screen to make sure they did go into anarchy before declaring war and attacking.
