can ships pass through fortress ?

Hi you all, did anyone notice that in Civ 5 there is no way to get ships pass through land? how am i supposed to get my naval units in Asia from the mediterranean? does anyone ever heard of the suez canal ?

A (friendly) city works as a canal for ships.

true .. the thing is that most of the maps i've been play with so far have 2 tiles of land in the area where the suez canal is supposed to be

yes thats because it was build in the 1860s and was not present at 4000 B.C.!
But i think it would be a nice feature to be able to build canals.
