Can someone suggest some good RPGs made by companies other then Square Enix?

I heard 2 really sucked but 3 was good.

The problem with the second xenosaga is that it and the first were supposed to be one game.. but they cut it in two.. but in a way like this: they let only one fourth of the story to the second game.. but to the second don't be too little they enlarged the story putting a lot of things tha made de game sux... So the game fells like the true story progress too slowly.. Anyways it's battle system improved (the battles on the first xenosaga were too slow and become borring too quickly) And the graphics changed a lot.. some loved.. some hated it

And the third is a amazing game.. they learned a lot by the first two.. The only problem is that on the second cd the story happens too quickly.. but is great nonetheless

Since you dislike the linear JRPGs with random battles I'll provide some alternative subgenres.

Open-Ended Exploration Games:
Fallout Series
Baldur's Gate 1
(Both hard to find, yet fun)

Semi-Linear Plot-Based Games:
Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment and Knights of the Old Republic 1 are must-owns.
KOTOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 are also pretty good.

Hack N' Slash (focused on tactics and non-random combat rather than story)
Icewind Dale Series
Diablo Series
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne bonus campaign. (the only part of that game with little/no RTS elements)

None of the Above:
Neverwinter Nights 1

The original campaigns and graphics are mediocre, but the player-made campaigns on http://nwvault.ign.com are superb. It's very cheap and still in print, so check it out.

Now, don't bash Square. I agree that Square has made it's amount of junk in the video game market, but who hasn't?

If you want my choice for favorite RPG, I would choose Persona from Atlus for the PS1. I know it's old and looks awful, but that game has stuck with me and is by far my favorite for the story, themes, and ideas in it. Persona 2 is also good and widely known as more user-friendly (read: easier).
