Can the Conquests disk be used to play the GOTM on PTW?

I am a long time GOTM player and know that the GOTM cannot be played on Conquests. However, Conquests comes with PTW bundled in it. I cannot figure out how to Play the World, and hence GOTM, while Conquests is in my CD drive. I know I can put my PTW disk in the drive and play, but would like to just leave my Conquests disk in the drive and be able to switch between the two programs.

Has anybody figured this out yet?

You should be able to open PTW normally. Try opening it via .../Program Files/Infogrames Interactive/Civilization III/Civ3PTW and click on the icon. It should work.

For me to get it to work, I had to uninstall PTW, then install it from the Conquests CD. Otherwise it wanted the PTW CD, I assume that it was checking for some unique code on the CD.

Yes, Justus, I think that must be what is happening to me. It keeps asking for the PTW disk. I will try uninstalling it and then reinstalling from the Conquests disk.

Remember, you will have to reinstall all the GOTM gamepacks after the reinstall of PTW (or you could copy all the \art and \text folders, I think, but I just reinstalled the game packs to be safe). But it works perfect for me. (I have two computers networked, and am trying to teach my son multi-player, so I wanted one computer running the PTW disk and one using the C3C CD) :)

Your suggestion solved the problem, Justus. Thank you.

It was necessary for me to uninstall the old PTW in order to get the PTW that came with Conquests to load. For those of you who are interested these are the steps you must follow:

1. Copy any games in your Conquests and PTW Save directories. This will probably not be required, but better safe than sorry.

2. Uninstall Conquests, using either the uninstall utility under Start\Programs\Atari\Civ III Conquests or by using the Add\Remove utility in Control Panel.

3. Uninstall PTW using the Add\Remove utility in Control Panel because there is no uninstall utility under Start.

4. Reinstall Conquests. This will insure you have the latest version of PTW- ver. 1.27.

5. When the installation is finished you should have a Conquests icon on your desktop. However, you will not have an icon for PTW. You will have to create one by going to Start\Programs\Atari\Civ III Play the World. Right click on Play the World and then “Send to” to create a shortcut.

6. Click on the shortcut and the initial Conquests screen loads and then takes you directly into PTW.

7. All my saved games were preserved and I did not have to recopy the ones I had initially saved.

Good luck!
