Hello.

I love Conquests, but just hate the new intro (especially the flamethrower sequence which IMO has nothing to do with the Civ spirit).
Is there a way to have the beautiful Vanilla intro launch instead?

Sure, just copy the INTRO file from the C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Art\Movies folder to the C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Conquests\Art\Movies folder.

The intro movie in Conquests is called Conquests, just rename it orgConquests or back it up somewhere so you don't lose it.

Rename the INTRO file CONQUESTS inside the C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Conquests\Art\Movies folder

Or you could just delete it and not have to watch the intro at all. Get straight into the civ action, no delays!

Putting PlayIntro=0 line into the conquests.ini file is more elegant.
No need to delete anything.
I had thought about that. But strangely, when I do this, the game launches itself with a badly centered image and a lousy refresh rate that really kills my eyes.
Anyone ever stumbled on this glitch?

No, but you can also add Refresh=XX, where XX is your monitor's refresh rate.

This should overcome that problem.

Well, strangely, it doesn't correct it completely.
No matter what refresh value I set, at least some scintillation remains. I have a very good 19' CRT and usually use it with a 120 Hz refresh rate. I have tried 75, 85, 100 and 120 and none is perfect (I've been comparing for half an hour now!). :(
I must admit I don't understand how changing the playintro variable can affect the refresh rate!

Doesn't make much sense.

You know, when I had my monitor change refresh rates on me, I had to recenter it via the monitor control panel. I'm wondering if something like this hasn't happened to you.

Interesting, I just realized that Conquests changes my refrsh rate from 85 to 75 every time a start a game (1200x1024).

Added Refresh=85 and no such thing anymore (not that I've noticed it before).

Yes, it had. And I have recentered the image. But some scientillation remains (I can see it). If I revert back to "playintro=1", then no scintillation.
It's very confusing.
Does anyone know how to determine ingame which refresh rate is actually used by the game?

Does your monitor have an option that displays what settings it is currently running at? I don't know of a way to find out from the game itself though.

Yes, my monitor has such an option. I've just realized that for the first time! Thank you.
However, the news is bad, because I've just done some testing and C3C simply ignores what I set as refresh value in the Conquests.ini. No matter what value I set, it defaults to 60Hz.
Maybe my syntax is wrong. I added the line "Refresh=85" (without spaces and of course without quotes). Am I doing anything wrong?

Well, it simply doesn't work.
To sum up my problem:
- When I set "playintro" to 1, the refresh rate is stuck on 85 Hz.
- When I set "playintro" to 0, the refresh rate is stuck on 60.
I can't even begin to imagine why this is possible and have no clue for fixing it.

Well, since I can't find a workaround to my problem, I have eventually decided to follow Maverick's advice and to remove the intro movie... It's not the most elegant, but it's the most efficient solution...
Thanks to anyone who has tried to help me.
