Wanted to try a DLC Civ in multi so picked one and someone said, "we can't play if you use a DLC Civ and we don't have the DLC", upon which the lobby promptly emptied :S

Is that true? In which case unless everyone has the DLC you can't use it in multiplayer? What happens, does the game crash or just not launch? I'm fascinated to know...

Okay managed to find some willing slaves, I mean volunteers, to experiment with. If you pick a DLC Civ all those who don't have it lose their "ready" status and cannot ready up.

Hope the developers fix that so others can at least play versus DLC owners using their civs!

Yeah, they should make a patch for everyone that installs all DLC content to everyone's computer, and merely make purchasing the DLC unlock it for use. In this way there wouldn't be compatibility issues.

haven't played in multiplayer yet since the latest patch, but if that is true it does need to be fixed. the commnunity for online play is already scarce, no use in limiting that even further.

I played exacly 1 game in mutli with DLC tribes. Actually was pretty fun. The problem is getting enough people with DLC. I had to plaster DLC ONLy on the headline and boot joiners who didnt have it. This splinters multiplayer even further..

I agree, and I have yet to see 2K Greg or anyone from Firaxis state if this is intended and why, or if this is a bug. Steam definitely does not have to work this way, Steam puts all DLC on everyone's installs, it is just encrypted if you have not paid for it. But it allows everyone to see the art assets etc of players that are using it.

So there is really no reason other than maybe a lack of a programmer that knows steam well, to have it programmed the way they have.
