"Cannot download because microsoft BITS has not been started".

Thank you for replying
I have read all the posts in thsi section
I followed your instructions and found that it said my bits was manual
When I try to change this i get told "access denied" and if i use the other button on the window to start this iget "error2 the system cannot find the file specified"

But the patch from steam downloaded ok and installed ok
I do not know what to do and would be very grateful for any advice

Thanks
Robert

Hi
I had this same problem after a lot of searching I found this site
www.burchwords.com/archives/1240
I followed the instructions and found the path in the registry had been corrupted in at least four places, so keep pressing the F3 after the first instance is found I did not do it the first time.

Some malware at some time must have changed paths to %fystemroot% instead of %systemroot% and although the avg virus system had picked up the malware and removed it it had missed these lines being changed in teh registry.
Only thing i can think is that the malware does not want updates to download to windows.

You can check if you have this problem by looking at the path in conttol panel/admin/services and if the path on the BITS is %fystemroots% then this is what is stopping your BITS from starting. The actual path is C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
but you must make the changes in the registry as described in teh article on the web and then after restarting the computer the path will change automatically in admin/services box.

I have been trying to download mods off the Mod Browser, but have been constantly getting error messages. More specifically, it says that "The server does not support the necessary HTTP protocol. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) requires that the server support the Range protocol header."

I only managed to download a mod off the Browser once, but never have been able to again. Googling or searching for this problem suggests that it is a back-end problem with the developers' servers, which should have been resolved already. If so, why am I still getting this problem? Does anyone know how to solve this, or direct me to somebody who can?

Thanks.

I had the same BITS does not start problem initially, and as it turned out, it was the same problem stated in post #22. I have managed to resolve this specific problem by altering the registry.

But I still cannot download mods. BITS is running fine, but I still get the Ranged Protocol error. Experimenting with random downloads, I can download some mods (e.g. the RED pack), but not others (e.g. Slowpoke's Megamod).
