Cannot join internet games - Stuck on 'Retrieving Host Information'

Every time I try to join a multiplayer game on the internet, it stops at 'Retrieving Host Information' then eventually says it was unable to.

Please, is there a way to fix this?

Make sure you have a fresh restart of Steam before trying to play mp. Steam p2p software is a bit wonky and will hang for a myriad of reasons, so best to be sure you are starting clean Also, in a small number of cases, your ISP provided internet gateway may be blocking a port used by the Steam p2p software. You can fix that by port forwarding the ports used by Steam, they are listed at Steam support.
