"Cannot Locate the DVD-ROM"

If you can see the exact filename you want on the LG site, then Googling on that filename will probably find it on a "driver downloads" web site somewhere. Take care though that you read the doco and that the firmware is intended for your exact model. Don't want to ruin your drive. The readme should tell you the firmware version, so don't run it if it doesn't update to a later version than you current one.

Found it on a download site, but it also appears to be 1.01. Tried to download it to have a look but it wouldn't there either, eventually it told me to turn off pop-up blockers. Turned off pop up blockers in browser, firewall... and the only pop-up I got was for "Find your Adult Friends" followed by a note that save was currently disabled. Not my night, have to try tomorrow after a little sleep.

Like I said in my previous post I am a complete novice.

I have downloaded sd4hide.exe and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with it. Could someone please help me before I do something I will regret.

What do I do with this programme................................. pm if you consider it so woefully simple it wastes precious board space.

OK guys the newb looked around and found out how to mount.

Did it all with several pieces of software and ended up getting it to work as good as I can hope. Right when i thought it was in the bag I got the same disc error so im calling it a night.

Thanks firaxis / take2

I have the same problem:

UK-DVD; game worked fine on the first try, but when started the 2nd time:

"Please insert the correct CD-ROM" (in German)

Ridiculous; new DELL PC, only software installed by me: Civ 4. No hacks, cracks, etc. what so ever.

It's a Sony DVD-ROM DDU165.

Now I'm clueless on how to continue.

As I am an impatient fool, I went and spent some of my rent money on a second DVD RW and installed it in place of the CD-RW. Now the works and looks very prety.

I also had problems with finding my DVD. I tried the sd4hide tool, but that didn't help. However, I think the problem was associated with some DLA(Drive Letter Access) - software installed on my computer. I updated the software and in addition, I set the transfer mode of my DVD to PIO only (IDE controllers on the device manager). After these steps, the "cannot find DVD" -error vanished..

PIO only? Wow, that's a lot of dedication! How long does it take to start the game now, half an hour? ;)

But yes, setting the IDE controllers of your drive to "PIO only" is definitely worth a try for the ones still having the problem.
Just be aware that it can take some minutes for the game to start then.

 SafeDisc4

I'm having the same problem with two drives

It wasn't working in my old Ricoh DVD-ROM drive so I went and bought a brand new NEC 4550 (only came out about a month ago) and I'm having the same problem with this new drive too. I'm not happy.

Every other game works fine.

My new one that works is a LITEON 16X DVD+R / +RW Drive, Cost me £45 at the shop near my house. You can one get much cheaper online but I am a lazy sod who hates waiting for stuff.

My only problem now is that I have spent some of the rent money and may get evicted from my flat. :(

Wow, that's dedication!

You could have got a Pioneer DVR-110d from here:

http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk/cgi-bin2/details.pl?id=p109cream

...for £33.98 including VAT and next day delivery, but the price you paid for the Lite-ON doesn't sound too steep. :)

Incidentally, has anyone tried at 'The Firmware Page' for their DVD drive updates?

e.g. here's the LG DVD-ROM page:

Make image with alcohol 120% latest version using safedisk 1-2 profile.
Then mount the image in d-tools and run sdhide.exe.
Then play the game.

...and when you run sd4hide.exe make sure you click 'Hide' before you try and play Civ IV!

After you've finished playing, click 'Restore'.

I installed as Admin, played as regular user.

Couldn't play again (see above).

Tried to play as Admin, and it works. But no less confusion.

As far as Alcohol 120% goes: That is not a free piece of software. Sure it works for 30 days or so on a free trial, but after that it will no longer work.

SD4HIDE works for me too, but when the 30 days run out, I am going to have to spend money to buy me another piece of software if I want to play without the CD. Since I have the original CD's nothing is going to prevent me from playing either way, but I would love it if game producers would do the "do-you-REALLY-have-the-original-CD?" checks on installation of the game, or maybe with an activation process just like MS Windows. (Their Activation phoneline is completely automated.)

Its much more effective in combatting piracy, and after installation is done, and your installation has been verified/installed/activated/screened through various methods, then you can nicely put the install CD away and play the (insert bad word here) game without having to insert the (insert really bad word here) cd's every time.

Its a shame that we have to use "shady tactics" just to play without the freaking cd....

It's against forum policy to link to 'no-cd/dvd' cracks but there is a DVD 'mini-image' out there which when not in use, compresses to a mere 500k or so!

When the trial for Alcohol 120% runs out you can use Daemon-Tools virtual drive(s) instead. That is a FREE utility. You can then mount either the .mdf/.mds image you made with the trial version of Alcohol 120%, or the DVD mini-image, and use sd4hide.

Either way you can put your DVD/CD safely out of the way of harm.

Yes, it is a PITA having to resort to this. In my case I have the full version of Alcohol 120% which I use to burn photo CDs in conjunction with Ultra ISO. I wouldn't touch programs like Nero with a bargepole.

The Safedisc protection with Civ IV 'blacklists' apps like Alcohol 120% and I too cannot play the game without having sd4hide running.

I will NOT be dictated to by game companies who insist that I have to uninstall a perfectly legitimate software application from my system in order to be able to play their games!

Virtual drives have far more usefulness than copy protection. One example is a game like Grim Fandango which WILL wear your CD-ROM drive out eventually or at least cause unnecessary wear and tear due to the constant CD accesses. Playing the game FULLY from the hard drive using 'virtual CDs' completely alleviates the problem.

That is just ONE example. There are many others.
