Hi everybody

I have a Dell dimension 4600 with Windows XP Home (danish version). Yesterday i just bought a new DVD-writer from Lite-on because i wanted to play Civilization IV, which I just had for christmas. After installing the drive into the computer it had no problem playing DVD-movies or reading my normal CD-roms, but when I put in the DVD-rom with Civilization IV, it wouldn't run the program-files on the disc:sad: . It is still possible to open "my computer" and see all the files on it, but when i try to run the program-files it comes up with the message: D:\ (filename) is not a valid win32-program. Even if I run DirectX9.0 on the disc it still comes up with the same error message.

I have tried:
-The game on another computer, where it worked fine.
-a new drive of the same kind (same problem)
-another DVD-drive from another manufacturer (BTC DVDRW IDE 16) (still same problem)
-changing from DMA to IPO only
-updating the newest drivers from the manufacturers website
-updating my Windows XP
-Updating my intel 865 chipset
-checked the games minimum and recommended requirements, which both are OK with my computer.

Any ideas for solving my problem are greatly appreciated or if you have an idea where to ask someone who knows it.

if you have a dvd burner that might be the problem, use sd4hide.exe, that can block the error, so the dvd player will reconice the dvd. This problem is maby because the game is copy-protected

 What is sd4hide.exe, and where do I get it?

Have you tried running it with a non-burning DVD drive? Many modern games won't work when put into a DVD-RW drive, due to copy protection. My DVD-RAM drive won't run Atari's Path of Neo game, but my DVD-ROM drive runs it fine.

I doubt DirectX' or the game's installer is copy protected, and according to him it still won't run.

Does it run if you copy the DirectX9 directory to your harddisc and start the installer from there? If that works something must be very messed up in Windows; if it doesn't, I'd try the disc in someone else's PC and get it exchanged if it still won't work...

Can you run programs from CDs using the DVD writer?

I have now copied directX9 from the DVD-writer to my harddisc and it worked fine installing it from there.

The first thing I did when I had the game was to install it on my fathers PC, and that worked fine. I don't know if he has a DVD-burner or just a DVD-reader.

I haven't got any problems running CD-ROM programs (civ III for instance) using my DVD writer.

I guess that the problem has something to do about Windows then, but does anybody know where to ask for support for that kind og problems?

The fact that it loaded from the hard disc, and that most people are ok from the DVD drive, obviously points towards the disc or the DVD firmware.

Assuming your discs are clean, the drive has been cleaned with a drive cleaning disc, and have no scratches on the DVD, it would seem to point to firmware. Maybe worth keeping that in mind if this crops up again with other game / app installs. The technology behind the lenses in CD & DVD Drives is very precise and it does not need much to make it fall over - its common for one perfectly good game not to load via the DVD due to old firmware on the DVD drive, yet load fine on another DVD drive.

I have now tried to start my computer in safe mode and then install the game, and that worked fine! And after trying to reboot in normal condition and then start the game it all works without a single problem!! :D

I didn't find out what the problem was, but i found a way to cope with it so now my civ IV era can begin!!:D :D :D

Thanks to all who tried to help me - I REALLY appreciate your help! :goodjob:

Now, back to cvi IV...:king:

Nice one enus wtg ! Safe mode shuts down nearly all background programs processes and drivers. There was obviously a clash with one of them - gawd knows which one - there are so many ....

Happy World Domination :)

Could it be you have some (pseudo-/in-)security program ("firewall", antivirus, etc.) installed that successfully turns your DVD drive into an instant doorstop, but won't run in safe mode?

EDIT: Yeah, what Zydor said... :D

I have original copy/package (in my country laws are to be followed). I tried it during several days using all known means. Disk doesn't work. I found one solution. It's not any more legal.

I retire now.
