First off Im fairly new to the game, but I have been playing quite alot over the past two weeks. I do not have the expansion yet, and quite frankly if the issue Im having is not a fixable bug, then I plan on returning the game and never touching it again. I have been playing alot lately and getting my butt kicked over and over, Ive finally came up with a few strategies and learned some hard lessons and I was actually starting to get the hang of it.
I was playing on the warlords skill level and managed to take up the entire center of the map pretty much from top to bottom basicaly forcing all the others to deal with what land they got on either side of me. Many of them having some of their cities seperated from the rest because I wasnt giving out open borders to anyone at first. I was leading the game in land and technology for 3/4 of the game until the later stages when I started to get hit by this bug. Alexander was to the right of me holding a small but good portion of the map to the right and aside from a few small cities here and there the rest of them had very little map on the right. I had stockpiled large forces all over the map basically preparing for some much needed payback from all the games prior that I was beaten up on. Alexander had knights while I had machine guns sams and artillary lined up in hordes all along his border, with a few destroyers in the waters off his coasts. At this point I decided to take back a city that revolted to his side earlier in the game. I declared war at which time he sent in hordes of guys on horseback and on foot across my borders, basically anytime he attacked, he got beat down pretty quick. I defeated the little clusters and staged my men to flank around into the city I was planning to take back. At this time I realized that every time I tried to initiate the attack, my men would not attack. I gave them the order to move into his tile, and they just stand there.
After a while it became a stale mate, with me not being able to attack his horses with my machine guns and him basically not attacking me anymore, I could do nothing. I spread my men all over my land to try and force him to attack them if he tried to destroy farms and villages, but he wouldnt attack. After about an hour of this, I started pulling out my smaller units, elephants, horsemen ect, and it seems they had not problem attacking, although with those units we were evenly matched and the most I could do was hope to win a battle here and there. After a long while, he started showing up with marines, and what do you know, I could actually engage those guys, but of course the marines were stronger than my machine gun guys. Still yet I had so many forces that it really wasnt going anywhere for him, and he had limited marines for me to engage. I moved a few men by ship around to one of his coastal cities that had a uranium supply in it. Me needing the uranium to or oil supply to continue to advance since most of the remaining countries were now starting to overtake me. I sent in another load of men by land to the same city, Neither force was able to attack the city. China eventually decided they were mad because I was trying to take out alexander and I guess he made a deal with them. By this point in the game china was beyond me in technology and land because I went so long in this battle no being able to advance my technology and land because I couldnt attack. So here I sit now, getting the crap beat out of me again, and I still cant attack anything with my machine guns. I cant make bombers or carriers because I need oil of uranium both of which are on alexanders side. Now Im getting beat down on both sides and 4 other countries are larger than me, and I still cant attack.\
Do these machine gunners have some sort of restriction from being able to attack men on horseback? It still doesnt make sense because one of the cities Im trying to attack has nothing but one machine gunner and a longbow man in it, and Im sitting all around it with about 7 machine gunners and it wont attack. If he attacks me they will defend but I cant initiate it. The other city im trying to attack from china has only one infantryman and one machine gunner in it, and I cant attack it. WHAT is the deal. I spent at least 5 hours building my country strategically only to get screwed by some bug. It's almost as like the AI is cheating because they knew if I destroyed alexander I would be unstoppable with the additional land and resources. Two major cities he had which would give me access to oil uranium and an earlier resource of iron the AI has gone out of its way to ensure I didn't have it, and is now basically cheating its way to not allow me to acquire it. Someone please tell me this is a fixable bug. Very dissapointing to get this far in it and have the game do its own thing to avoid losing.
