I was waging war and had to declare peace as I didn't have enough units. At that point I got access to musketman and I have no saltpeter, so I went to make more Legions (I am Trajan) and they aren't on my list.

Now I can't build Musketman nor Legion or any warrior class at all.

This is a known bug/design flaw. Hopefully fixed in first patch. When you research a new unit type upgrade, the old one goes immediately obsolete.

Silly, but working as intended. You can only ever build the highest available unit of a unit-class, and should avoid unlocking the next one at all cost as long as you still want to construct the old ones.

I ran into the same issue in my Rome game. This is why it's not a good idea to have resource-requiring units be made obsolete by the tech which replaces them.

...

True.
It would make sense if you would be able to build the old units till you have the resources available, to build the newer ones

I think it was a bad decision by the devs to make it work this way.

If they really want you to pick one unit of each class, they should have done it similar to EU4 where tech simply gives you the option to change the unit of that class to an upgraded one.

So when you unlocked muskets and realise you dont have the resource, you simply elect to keep your melee class at the "Legion" level.

You know the civlopedia doesn't even tell you what technology your units obsolete at? You have to guess.

Whoever designed the gameplay portion of the civlopedia should probably get a nasty salary reevaluation.

In Civ VI, every unit obsoletes on the tech allowing the unit to be upgraded.
