New, started my 2nd single player game. Opening was surrounded by mountains and all tiles are hills. So far, after 27 turns, I have not found a single tile I can build on.

Why, and do I now just quit and start a new game?

If you aren't up to continuing the game at this time, I recommend you save the game to continue after you have gained more experience. Could be very interesting to see if you can dig yourself out of the hole you have started in (assuming you aren't TOTALLY hemmed in by mountains).

Tks for the help - I started a new game - I am new and trying to dig myself out of a hole is not what I had in mind right now. :) The place the other game started was in the middle of 4 mountains and all the tiles around me and out a ways were hills. After 27 turns I had not found a single tile that I could build on.

My 1st game - after the tutorial - finished yesterday after 500 turns. I never could find a way to get to missionary's so this game I have made it a point to get everything that has anything to do with religion and after 167 turns still can't get a missionary. Meanwhile, 3 of my cities have been converted.

And learned a big lesson on this game - settle all the cities you want right at the start - it gets very expensive and many, many turns to get something later in the game.

Question - should I attack city states around me? Do I get anything for doing so?

1. Hills and mountains = great start... hills+mountains+river = outstanding start.
2. To get religion, you need holy district. You can generate faith without it, but you need district to get prophet. Policy that gives you +2 points to prophet is usually not enough, AI will beat you.
3. And finally, war with city states? I prefer to have city states intact. Envoys, trade routes, handling barbarians are more important IMO than land. At some point you will be hated by everyone except city states.

If you want to play the religion game, here's more or less what you need:
  • Found a Pantheon. You need 20 faith, which you can get through building a Holy Site district, religious City-State bonuses (after you send at least 1 envoy, or meet them before anyone else), tribal villages, or working tiles with specific resources.
  • Get a Great Prophet. To get him, you need to accumulate Great Prophet Points (GPP), through building a Holy Site again, or via the Policy card Revelation. Alternatively, building Stonehenge lets you get a free one. Arabia also gets a free one if it's the last recruitable Great Prophet.
  • Found a religion. You need either a Holy Site or Stonehenge.
  • If you haven't built a Holy Site yet, you need it now. Build a Shrine on a Holy Site to unlock the ability to purchase Missionaries using faith.
  • Build a Temple in your Holy Site to unlock Apostles. Those can attack other religious units, even missionaries.
  • Spend some Apostles to unlock new beliefs and the ability to buy Inquisitors for defense
  • Send your religious units everywhere to spread out your religion.
  • Optional (but very, very powerful): Befriend Yerevan as soon as possible. You can usually decide your Apostles' promotions from only 2 random alternatives; Yerevan's Suzerain can choose amongst all the possible promotions.
About attacking a neighbor, yes, it's a good idea. But attack City-States only if there's no Civ nearby, and obviously only the ones not related to your planned victory. For example, if you want a Religious Victory, do not attack any Religious City-States. In fact, the most powerful early games usually revolves around wiping out a neighbor Civ.

Couldn't build anything with builder. No matter which tile I put it on, nothing comes up white showing it can be built.

Many improvements require certain techs to unlock them (even mines! or chopping forests! etc)

Tundra is a lot more limited however, unless you have special improvements from your civilization.

Were you in tundra?

Tks, Shin -

Got the Pantheon - did not notice about religious city/state.

Got Prophet, Holy Site.

Got Holy Site but founding religion did not pop up.
  • If you haven't built a Holy Site yet, you need it now. Build a Shrine on a Holy Site to unlock the ability to purchase Missionaries using faith.
Got Holy Site and Shrine.
  • Build a Temple in your Holy Site to unlock Apostles. Those can attack other religious units, even missionaries.
Built Temple.

Got message I could now buy missionaries and Apostles but when I go to purchase with faith it is blank - nothing to buy.
  • Send your religious units everywhere to spread out your religion.

Don't see why I have nothing showing in the buy with faith now.

Even if you have a Holy Site, shrine and temple in a city, if that city does not have your religion (any religion) as the majority religion (i.e., that religion's symbol in the city banner), the faith-purchase options in that city will be blank.

Think I figured out the can't build problem -

The tutorial and the first game I played - and the one I am playing now - started with one settler and one warrior - this game started with one warrior but one builder instead of a settler. Must have been a bug or something because I assume one can not build without first having a city.

That is quite odd -- yes, you need a city to build anything, or to research anything. Were you playing with a mod?

My second game - or was going to be. Singer player and let it do it's thing.

Almost 200 turns into my 2nd game and have had the same problem as my 1st one - religion. I have made a point of trying to move up with everything than has anything to do with religion but now have all 5 of my cities converted. shortly after the last one, I am able to buy missionaries, etc but too late.

If I now buy missionaries, etc., will they be the converted religion? Is there any way to get my religion back and my cities back?

1. Yup.
2. Usually nope. In your next game, either reach the point at which you can buy an Inquisitor faster or else delay founding the religion with the GP until you have more faith points and closer to being able to buy Inquisitors.

Then there is no reason to continue with the game as there is no way I can win - assuming I had any possibility of winning to start with. :)

Maybe I'll just start attacking everyone - I have over 3500 faith points which I can now buy other stuff than religious things. :)
