Cant change civis nor religions during gameplay

so there no revolution button in the civics window, only the "close" and it doesn't work either... Same in the religions window.. This makes the game reallyy annoying.. I can only change civis when i get a new technology and it asks me. I dunno how to fix it, and apparently patches wont install... a friend of mine installed me civ4:bts but its different because i dont need a cd to play it.. so i think thats why patches wont install... what can i do ?

Welcome to CFC

reinstall the game and use the original files - not a no-cd crack.
then patch the game to the latest version.
This sounds like some game files are corrupted.

I've had the exact same problem. I bought the Beyond the Sword expansion from 'Game' s online store and it installed fine but during gameplay I can't change civic and religion types. Should I hammer them for a refund? (gamesplanet.com is who emailed me the files etc.) Or is there something I can do to fix it?! It's frustrating - was looking forward to the expansion and my local shop didn't have a physical copy.

Think I've solved it mate - Did your original Civ4 have the latest patch?

I uninstalled everything - then reinstalled Civ4 and updated it with the latest patch - then when I installed BTS it now seems to work.
