Cant get MP to work, need advice

Hi, I just got civilization 4 for Christmas and I want to play it online, but whenever I try to use internet games I cant connect, it just locks up my computer and i have to pull the plug.

I this much, its not my router or firewall because i hardwired the modem to my computer, and turned off the firewall just to see if it worked; it didnt.

Do I just need the latest patch, if i do, Whats it called.

Iv downloaded the latest patch now v1.74 from firaxis.com. I got and error message at the end of the installation saying that no version of Sid Meyers civilization 4 was found and the installation cant complete.

Now the game wont launch. because im missing a file called d3dx9_32.dll not found.

The d3dx9_32.dll problem is addressed on the "Start up" page. Installation of the patches should be manual - the ingame patcher is faulty. You may have to uninstall Civ IV and run a registry cleaner to remove any registry information for the patch that failed to repatch.

For a registry cleaner, I really like ccleaner, available here:

You can use it free, do be careful to back up registry changes and realize you can mess your computer up with it if you get carried away deleting things.

I'd install Civ IV, use the website to download the 3.17 patch and install that file (its an executable) and, if need be, use the information from support to fix the dll problem.
