Hi, I'm a GalCiv veteran and I'm still fairly new to the Civ series. I got my hands on Civ4, my very first Civ game, for a few brief weeks before realizing that Civ5 has been available for some time So I grabbed that instead.
Well, long story short I just have no idea how to specialize my cities. I've tried sticking with the buildings that give the immediate benefit, i.e. nothing but market/bank/stock for gold cities and forge/barracks/occasional workshop for production cities. But I always, always end up with severe gold deficit, hammer shortage or culture/land deficit.... And quite frankly I can't understand WHY. I'm very careful about my city placements barring a few cases where I had to drop a "skeletal" city to prevent the A.I. from denying me iron or being forced to settle for less than ideal location because of aggressive A.I. expansion (seriously, I don't understand why they literally walk up to my border, take the silk and two free tiles right next to my capital and complain that MY civ is being aggressive about expanding, but I digress).
Do I really need to waste a load of hammer and pay the upkeep just so that my gold city can get the market up and running in a reasonable time frame? Do I really need those production buildings just so my tech city can overcome the pitifully low prod-to-tech conversion ratio? I'm sorry if I'm starting to sound whiny but I just don't see how I can overcome this issue. If I make my cities useful my gold suffers, and if I take care of my gold my cities suffer. I just don't understand how I'm supposed to "specialize" my cities.
What exactly am I doing wrong here?
