Can't install game

During the install process, upon inserting the 2nd CD and clicking "ok" I get an error message that says "catastrophic error". There's only one thing to click on that little message window ("ok") and then the install window closes and the entire install process is terminated. It seems to copy all the files from CD #1 just fine...the install progress bar goes about halfway across before asking for disc #2. (BTW, disc #2 shows a 660MB or so /cab file)
I called the tech support phone number, and they sent me an email with tips to fix an install problem...none of them either applied or helped. Called them back and they said it sounded like a defective CD #2. So, I went back to the store and exchanged it for another. Same problem.
Has anyone else had this problem? I've installed MANY games over the years, and I have never had this issue. I'm running WinXP SP2, and in fact, did a complete fresh reformat/reinstall of Windows about 6 weeks ago, so my system isn't bogged down with too much junk. It just doesn't want to continue the install process from CD #2. I wish it were on 1 DVD, then I wouldn't have this problem.
I tried closing out every service I could (running in the background) and also tried using my other optical drive (a DVD RW/CD Rom) and no luck.
I'm very annoyed. Looks like $50 down the drain....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Light it on fire and summon the demon Reiem Dis to assist you. He's the nice one.

Or take it to your game store and ask to exchange Civ4: Land of Poo for ES4:Oblivion. Well worth it, and, unlike civ, it actually works out of the box. Which the defenders of this version of civ would have you believe is not possible.

The third option is to PM Harkonnen. He is pretty crafty, and can probably help you out.

LOL.
Well, I found some other posts from folks having the same problem. Apparently, if the cab file date on disc 2 doesn't match the file date on disc, then you'll have this problem. So, went back to Best Buy and checked the file dates on their last two boxes of Civ IV. Sure enough, they were bad, too. So, BB refunded my money. I'm am pissed off at Take2andshoveit software. They'll never get a dime from me in the future. This is a known issue, and they didn't recall their bad product off of store shelves. Completely unacceptable.
