I have unzipped the file to C:/Program files/2K games/ Firaxis games/ mods

I created the mods folder myself so there is a folder for Sid Meier's Civilization IV Colonization and a folder for mods. The Westward Ho files are in the mods folder but I don't see a file with exe.
Is there an executable file that doesn't have exe in it's name?
I tried opening the game through the shortcut in that folder and I the game opens but it gives me a mod error message and westward ho isn't offered as a mod in the game.

Help!

Mods don't have exe files. Or, rather, some do, but these files are used to install the mod, not run it. The shortcuts to run a mod point to the main Colonization exe but with a "mod=\_modname_" appended to it (so, "C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Colonization\Colonization.exe" mod="WestwardHo"). The mod name in the shortcut is the name of the mod folder in Sid Meier's Civilization IV Colonization\Mods.

In the Mods folder you created, there should be a WestwardHo folder. Inside that, there should be an Assets directory, a WestwardHo.ini file, a WestwardHo.ini.bak file, a readme, the shortcut, and maybe some other files.

Is this the way things are set up? Or are all those files and folders inside the Mods folder, not the Mods\WestwardHo folder? If you did that, create a new folder inside Mods called "WestwardHo" and move all the unzipped files into it.

ok, I got Westward Ho as an option in the load a mod folder when I start the game by moving the mod folder I created into the Colonization folder. Now when I select that mod it starts to reload the game but then I get an XML error message.

Any suggestions?

Now I can't even start the original game because I've copied and pasted files all over the place. What a pain in the ass. Why can't explicit instructions come with these things, not everyone who wants to play is a computer genius.

Can someone please tell me step by step exactly how to install this mod from scratch.
Thanks.

I think I see the problem- you need to install the 1.01f patch first. Someone else got an XML error when they didn't do that. Don't use the in-game updater, as it doesn't always work- download it from here and run the exe.

Anyway, since you asked for explicit instructions, here they are:
  1. Install the 1.01f patch from here
  2. Find where you installed Colonization to. This should be a directory in the C:\Program Files (or whatever drive you installed it to)- usually C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Colonization.
  3. In this directory, create a Mods folder.
  4. Unzip the files from the WestwardHo.zip folder into the Mods folder
  5. Now, in your Mods folder you should have a WestwardHo folder. Inside this folder there should be a folder called "Assets" and several other files.
  6. One of these other files should be a shortcut. Double-click it and it should load the mod.

thanks for your help, Ill give it a try when I get home from work. I think Im gonna have to reinstall the original game first though :(

sweet, thanks, I got it.

I kept trying to copy and paste the mod into the original files like you would do with a crack, lol.

Thanks again for your help!!
