Can't load warlord with Civ4

My son bought the disk for warlords. We previously had installed the download version of CivIV. The warlord start-up says it cannot find a version of Civ4. I called the tech support, and they said that disk version of warlord is notcompatible with download version of Civ4. This doesnt make sense to me (seems it should be the same binary). It seems more likely that something is not right with the registry, so the warlord installation is not finding civ4. Any recommendations? Or, will this just not work?

Sorry, but you can't mix disc and download versions. It just won't work. Even download versions have to be from the same source.

ugh now i will have to search for what website i downloaded normal civ from 2 years ago to download warlords

Steam has Civ 4 on sale this weekend - it may be cheaper to buy complete.
