I was playing my caveman to cosmos mod tonight and all of a sudden my screen went black and started blinking when I went into the games library. I restarted windows and loaded my saved game but a error popped up telling me : Initialize renderer failed check derectx instalation. I can't even start a regular beyond the sword game up and get a the same error message. what do I need to do to fix this? is it telling me I need to update drivers for my graphics card, I am using a nvidea geforce 7300GT. I tried to update drivers but had problems downloading the new drivers and there was more then one driver to choose to download. I decided to go to the main graphics website to download a new driver from there but I realized that it took up a lot of megabites on my computer so I didn't download it. hopefully its not the drivers that need to be updated for my game to work. I almost feel as though the graphics card company is forcing me to update my drivers or else they make it to where my game won't work. I don't know mabey I'm just being perinoid.

It sounds to me like there is a pretty good chance your graphics card is malfunctioning. It may be overheating, or some other issue (like old age - electronic components do slowly wear out and I'm guessing this is over 5 years old).

At the very least, you should try a complete power down for several seconds before booting to make sure everything is actually reset. Picking a "reboot" directly from inside Windows may not be quite good enough to get everything completely reset.

It may also be a good idea to open up the case and, after restarting, make sure the fan on the graphics card is working. A bit over a year ago I had the fan on my graphics card fail and the card worked fine for desktop use but when running the game it would eventually fail in various ways due to overheating, sometimes failing completely which caused it to not put out a signal to the monitor and therefore the monitor went black and then indicated that no video input was detected (which sounds like what happened to you). The graphics card may use passive cooling (so it hasn't got a fan), in which case you need to make sure it is clean and not clogged up with dust which makes a pretty good insulator and can cause high temperatures in the thing if there is enough of it. Also check the other fans to make sure they are working, since a failed fan on the case will cause poor airflow resulting in heat built up. You can download a graphics card monitor to tell you how hot it is getting, for example GPU-Z from TechPowerUP will tell you everything about the card and can monitor all of its sensors including temperature. Different cards will run at different temperatures normally, so something like 80 or even 90 degrees C might be normal (I doubt it should go over 90 unless perhaps it is the fanless version which are typically designed to run hotter) but if it goes over 100 degrees C it is almost certainly overheating (on the other hand, the one I had fail could actually still work while reporting over 120 C for a while before it would actually fail, and I saw it go over 130 on a couple of occasions, so it might keep working just fine when only a little over 100 C).

If it is a notebook computer this is all more complicated to check. A monitor program like GPU-Z should still tell you how hot it is running.

Also, before panicking about possibly having a near-dead graphics card, run "dxdiag". This is the DirectX diagnostic tool. It is a good first check to make sure that is still working, or if it can spot an issue. There a some small chance that the DirectX installation has gotten messed up. If you are running Windows XP this tool even has tests you can run (on versions of Windows after that it only shows information, no tests are available).

It is also possible that your Civ4 installation is messed up.

So a question is can you play any other 3-D games? If they all have the same problem then it is either DirectX itself or the video card.

The good news about the video card is that if you do need to replace it then the lowest end current generation GeForce card, the GT 610, is (theoretically, anyway) probably a bit over 3.5 times as fast as your current card, has 1GB memory (2GB in some cases), and costs under $50 including shipping here in the US (I just checked Newegg and they are mostly in the low to mid 40s + $3.99 shipping) or you can go up by around $10 for a GT 620 (twice as many cores, each a bit slower, but same memory and memory bus width) or up to somewhere around $70 for a GT 630 (same core count as 620 but each slightly faster, same as the 610 I think, and with a memory bus that is twice as wide - although there is a completely different design also called the GT 630 which has many more cores of a different design, due to being a cut down newer GPU instead of the older GPU the "regular" one uses, but a narrower memory bus with slightly faster memory; I have no idea why they do stupid things like two completely different designs with the same model number). Any of these can handle Caveman2Cosmos better than what you currently have. And, of course, you can spend more to get cards that are faster, or even several times faster, but it is probably a bit pointless on a motherboard that is the same vintage as a GeForce 7300GT.

okay, I shut down my computer entirely and shut off power for a while, then started it up again. I checked inside the computer when it was on and the fan for my graphics card is not working and won't spin. about a month ago something happened to my computer and my computer tells me there is a bios problem at the beginning whenever I restart my computer, I have to wait some minutes before the computer actually starts rebooting and I hear a continuous white noise or beep that I don't usually hear on my computer. I'm thinking mabey it has to do with the graphics card, I don't know.

Since my graphics card fan doesn't spin, do I need a new graphics card? I didn't start my game yet after turning on power and starting up my computer again, all try the game one more time

I am assuming you don't have some weird graphics card that only turns on its fan when it gets hot. The fans are normally variable speed, but the low end is not 0 it is generally at least a few hundred RPM and typically more like at least 1000.

While it may be OK for web browsing and other simple desktop use, when running in full 3-D mode the card will overheat without a working fan. You have seen the result of that. It may be possible to mitigate it temporarily by leaving the case open and pointing a regular desk or room fan at it from some relatively short distance to give it a lot of air flow, but that is not a good long-term solution and might not completely prevent overheating anyway.

In theory, you could just replace the fan and heatsink (or possibly just the fan, although this could be a little tricky since they are generally built into the heatsink). Coolers for graphics cards are available, although you have to make sure it is compatible (usually not much of an issue) and then you have to remove the old one and install the new one (messing around with the thermal compound which insures a good thermal connection between the heat sink and the GPU in the process). A cheap cooler (fan + heatsink) runs about $10 plus shipping (which might be free) and an inexpensive but not so cheap one will be around $15 + shipping. And then after that you have the same old graphics card which might be nearing the end of its lifespan anyway due to age (expecting most PC components to last longer than 5 years is wishful thinking, especially if they are ever stressed at all and Civ4, especially with C2C, certainly stresses the thing).

On the other hand, you can get a whole new and much better graphics card than the one you have for maybe 4 times what a cheap cooler costs, or 3 times what an inexpensive but not quite so cheap one costs. And if you get a really low cost graphics card that is not much better than the one you have (like a GeForce 8400 GS or a GeForce 210, either of which can be had for around $30 + shipping) the difference is even smaller so...

Yes, I expect you should replace the graphics card.

Unless you replace the entire computer. If it is having other issues, and it sounds like it is, it may be time for this if you can afford it. After replacing my graphics card last summer, I had to replace most of the rest of the innards last January when then motherboard died completely.

well, my game runs now but do you think I still need a graphics card still since my fan doesn't work?(sorry, that may be a dumb question)

I think I can afford one under 50 dollars and go for a gt 610. I probably won't need to order one online because there is a fry's electronics near where I live so I can probably get one from there.
