Can't run in windowed mode

Yesterday, Civ 4 BTS would run in windowed mode. Today, it seems to have lost the ability rather mysteriously. When I go to Options and uncheck "Full Screen Mode" (or whatever the option is called) and exit, when I come back it's checked again. It's like it's not saving my changes to that setting, or it's auto-reverting to full screen every startup.

I'm running the Steam version of BTS on Windows 7. The Steam version doesn't have the CivilizationIV.ini file and also seems to lack all .xml files, so I can't seem to make modifications in there, unless they're in some weird location I haven't found.

I tried out the "Colonization" game this morning, which is the only change I can think of. Couldn't set windowed mode there, so I tried BTS and I couldn't set it there either all of a sudden.

This is really frustrating, I hate playing games in full screen because I like being able to do other things on the computer when the game is running.

Can anyone help?

Same to me.

I'm running a retail version of BTS / Complete on Windows 7 in Windows XP compatibility mode.
And I added all the changes to the ini file.
But BTS seems simply to ignore the ini file records. Even if I uncheck the full screen box in game, this change is not written to the ini file. Is there another place for the ini file then the link in the game folder?

Anybody any ideas?

Thx for the hint. The second link hinted me to the ...\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CivilizationIV.ini. I always changed the ...My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\CivilizationIV.ini.

How it works for me now:
- add fullscreen and resolution lines to ...\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CivilizationIV.ini
- set ...\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CivilizationIV.ini to read only
- uncheck 'execute as administrator' for the ...\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe
--> this way the game cannot overwrite anmore the settings in the ini file and will use the settings from the ini file.

As you discovered, each of the original game and the Warlord and BTS expansions have their own .ini file. Changing the file for one version does not affect the other two. Unfortunately, all three have the same name but are in different locations. So, be sure to change the .ini for the version that you are playing.

Maybe Alt-Enter could work, not sure... Oh, and what s.bernbaum said, it's a real pain but that's how expansions are.
