Can't Trade Resources with Other Civs

Just recently got the game, and every match I've played so far, I've run into an annoying problem...

Whenever I enter the trade screen, none of the other civilization's resources show up. I can visibly see on the map that they have the resource I want, and it's connected to their empire by road, but it doesn't appear on the menu.

Help! What am I doing wrong?

In Civ4, their recources only show in the diplomacy if they have a surplus of that recource, so if they only have 1 it won't show.

Ya like the above poster said, they have to have a surplus. You also have to beable to trade with them for their goods to show up. You need to have a trade route, and if it's over seas, you need the astronomy tech.

If you don't see the 3 trade arrow triangle symbol by their name, you don't have a trade route. You have to be able to trace a route along a road and/or river, a coastal route only in both of your borders, any coastal route with sailing, or an ocean route with astronomy (not optics) or a mix of these to their capital (usually anywhere in thier road network) to make a connection. Then they will only trade a resource if they have it developed, connected, and a surplus of it; they always keep one for their own use nd it won't show up if theyve traded all surplus of it.
