Ok… I’m playing China and had no horses for the Riders. Now I traded, and got horses. I even renegotiated for another 20 turns… until they attacked me on turn 12. Now, I can’t seem to upgrade my Riders to Cavalry. Do you need to have the resource to upgrade an existing unit?

(I rushed to Military Tradition just to find out I can't upgrade... what a waste of time! )

Thanks. I guess I'll just have to invade... before I get run over by Incan Cavalry. I'm stocked up with cannons and musketmen. I'll use the couple of Riders to finish up after I red line the enemy... hopefully. The RNG has not been too good to me in this game. :(

Don't attack then...

Or just attack a city that has horses or try and trade for some horses held by someone else. But by all means don't make a semi suicidal attack...

I think there was a story in the story forum where someone actually skipped cavalry because he thought riders were "only" 2 attack points less than cavalry so he can rush into the industrial age and wait for tanks. I'll try to find it for you.

I actually managed to build a grand total of 1 calvary unit and survive till armor came around...albeit I didn't fight in any wars (they were declared, but nobody showed up) had infantry and artillery to hold the lines, and stormed with infantry until tanks showed up...slower movement, but the fact they stop most counter-attacks dead is a huge bonus.
