I have no idea what is going on here, or what I am missing.

Often I try to upgrade units, but often the game won't allow me to upgrade the units, even though I have the required techs, the cities that I'm trying to upgrade them in are linked to the required resources and I have enough money to do the job. What else could I be missing? I've checked the manual, can't find anything about it.

Somebody please help!

To elaborate a little. The barracks must be in every city that you wish to perform and upgrade in. And they must have the resource access.

For stupid reasons known only to itself, Firaxis did not make some units upgradeable. Change that in the Editor if so.

All Unique Units should be upgradeable, but no unit should upgrade to a UU. Check that also. Edit.

Zouave, you are completely out of line here, actually.

For upgrade to work properly for everyone, in a case where two (or more) unique units are involved

Say you want to make Swordsmen upgrade to knight. You do not want to lose the legion and immortal in the list. (IE, Romans and Persians should still be able to upgrade their warriors to their swordsman-replacement).

The list should go as this.

Warriors should upgrade to swordsman.
Swordsman should upgrade to legionaire.
Legionaire should upgrade to Immortal (or the other way around for these two).
Immortal should upgrade to Knight.

When you become able to build *ANY* unit that's somewhere on the "evolution line" of one you have, you will be able to upgrade your older units, even if you are unable to build an in-between units.

IE, assuming an upgrade line such :

U1 - U2 - U3 - U4.

If you have some U1 around, are unable (For whatever reason, wheter it is lack of resource, not being the right civ, etc) to produce the U2 or U3, and just gained the tech and resources to produce (and thus upgrade to) the U4, you *WILL* be able to do so.

To make a UU-less example, you could upgrade spearmen to riflemen *REGARDLESS* of wheter you were able on the turn just before to upgrade them to musketmen or pikemen (due, for example, to lacking the appropriate resources).

Why would you not want to upgrade to UUs?

When upgrading it automatically upgrades to the most advanced unit you can build skipping all that you can't

To upgrade you need the tech, the resources, the money, and a barracks in the city the unit is in.

Some units are dead ends on purpose making you think about what you build.
